Well, unlike the Artemis crew, I’ve been on Earth.

Lots of adventures, and vicariously watching my travelers adventures, and watching my kid start middle school, and just being a human. Such is life.

I’ve done quite a bit since the last time we talked, and I’m about to do more this summer - so instead of being super detailed, which is great but also sometimes becomes overwhelming when I’m focusing on the mundane day to day realities of being a travel advisor (business planning, travel management, quoting, follow ups, etc) - sometimes I forget this Substack exists.

So, let’s pretend that this is the start of the new year, because what is a calendar without a start - and what is a year but just a collection of time.

What has happened since November? That’s the last time you posted.

popped back into Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party for the first time since 2016

Saw a bunch of new to me things and said good bye to DINOSAUR

and then hopped on the Disney Wish for a birthday adventure with my friends!

AND THEN

I went to Epic Universe to complete the week and it was the most beautiful theme park ever.

and that was my November 2025. I also slept a lot after that 10 day spree.

It’s been a hot minute and I’m jumping back here to chat about various travel things.

First and foremost, Jamaica.

If you’ve been watching the news or Weather Channel, probably you saw some coverage of Hurricane Melissa, and its effect upon the island nation of Jamaica this past week, along with secondary trauma to Cuba and Haiti.

As a travel professional and more importantly - a human on this planet, it’s hard to watch any destination suffer such damage, when the spiderweb of damage will extend worldwide with regards to loss of life, financial losses, and economical damage to the industries of the countries - especially when tourism features so heavily in this area of the world.

If it can work for you financially, please consider a monetary donation to an organization focused on providing real, meaningful assistance to those affected by Hurricane Melissa. Not every charitable organization is the most helpful - but these below are truly focused on rebuilding and reclaiming what was lost.

• Sandals Foundation - the Sandals and Beaches Resorts chain is based in Jamaica and many of their Jamaican resorts were directly impacted. Their foundation has been around for a long time, helping the citizens of the islands where their resorts are located, and they have a secondary special fund just for Jamaican relief.

• World Central Kitchen - founded by Chef José Andrés, is focused on providing food and meal relief to those affected by devastation. An incredible organization, with a rapid response team that truly uses food to save lives. They were boots on the ground in Jamaica within hours of relief flights landing on the island. Last year, WCK provided 109 million miles to those affected by conflict, natural disasters, and climate crises around the world.

• Doctors Without Borders - also known as Medicins Sans Frontieres - they provide medical relief around the world when humanitarian crises occur. They primarily allocate their monies towards numerous world projects; they are sending teams to Jamaica for assist with health care needs in the area.

If you had planned to travel to Jamaica in the next 2 weeks, it is recommended for folks to consider rescheduling or rebooking their vacation, to allow recovery efforts to occur around the island. Currently, resort destinations are focused on spending their time working on any needed recovery and rehab for their location, as well as the needs of their staff. Travelers that were not able to leave the island, are in process of getting flights back home - so let the country breathe and recover for a bit.

Guests with plans for December, majority of resorts are happy to accept travelers unless you’ve been contacted specifically. Visit the Jamaica Tourism Board site for up to date info on travel news to Jamaica. Contact your airline if your flights need modified, and check in with your resort (and travel advisor) with any questions.

THIS IS ANOTHER REASON WHY TRAVEL INSURANCE IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. Please consider travel insurance for all travel out of country (and for many in-country vacations as well). I knew I wouldn’t feel right not addressing the hurricane first, so while it’s heartbreaking news, watching updates from resorts and silly videos from residents of Jamaica on TikTok and Instagram, bring some much needed light to the party. One Love will still go on.

Onto other more enjoyable news updates!

• The Disney Destiny is scooting towards its first media cruises in the next weeks, with first official guests set to board at the end of this month. I am very excited, because I am booked to sail on this ship in early January with friends, and it should be a delightful experience, even more so with the Heroes/Villains theme of this ship. LION KING DINNER THEATER! CRUELLA DE VIL BAR! HERCULES STAGE SHOW! Those are the three things that have me excited for that cruise. Let me know if you’re thinking of venturing onto the ship - it will be sailing out of Fort Lauderdale, FL for its initial homeport with Bahamas midrange itineraries

• Royal Caribbean has a surprise announcement of a new Royal Beach Club coming to the island of Santorini next summer 2026! They’ve previously announced beach clubs for Paradise Island, in Nassau, Bahamas (opens late December 2025); Cozumel, Mexico at some point in 2026, and a Perfect Day Mexico (Costa Maya) in 2027.

  Royal Beach Club Santorini will be a refurbished area with an entire day of adventure for its guests. Per Royal’s site:

  • Introducing Ultimate Santorini, a full-day excursion full of the island’s

    must-see landmarks, now featuring Europe’s first ever Royal Beach

    Club starting in summer 2026. Your adventure begins with a scenic

    ferry tour along Santorini’s breathtaking coastline. Bask along a

    • What’s the difference between Royal Beach Club and Perfect Day? Royal Beach Clubs are like an excursion - pay admission and enjoy an all-inclusive experience (with or without alcohol, depending on your option) with pools, beaches, cabanas (an extra booking) and more.

      • Perfect Day Mexico will be similar in focus to the Perfect Day at CocoCay island destination - except it will be not an island, but a private destination area for all Royal Caribbean guests when they stop at Costa Maya, in addition to regular port excursions.

I hope you’re doing well! I’m just trundling along, watching folks go and return from their vacations, and living gloriously through them until it is my turn to escape. Which, it just was, and clearly I didn’t post about it here, but I’m back from another cruise and that was a true delight. Probably I’ll chat about it here, but this post has been in the queue for awhile so it’s time to push SEND and get it done.

Which brings me to this week’s topic

No, not taking selfies with elk statues - but ALASKA!

It’s our 49th state. It doesn’t touch the lower 48, as it’s surrounded by the Yukon Territory and British Columbia, so if you’re driving to Alaska (doable, but allow for a lot of road time) you’ll need a passport. Otherwise, you’ll grab a flight into the two main airports - Anchorage International Airport and Fairbanks International Airport. Majority of folks will fly into Anchorage, but if you’re taking a cruise tour, or just exploring the heart of Alaska, you’re probably taking a flight in/out of Fairbanks as well.

When people think Alaska, a lot of times they think of a cruise. Alaskan cruises are very lovely, but they only visit the lower panhandle of the state.

See that lower southeastern panhandle? Typically most cruises roam around those islands, visiting Ketchikan, Sitka, Icy Strait, Juneau, Glacier Bay, and a variety of other options. These cruises are usually round trip out of Seattle or Vancouver, BC, and run 4-7 nights, depending on the cruise.

However, for those a little more adventurous - may I recommend doing a cruise tour?

A cruise tour is combining a cruise with a land tour - so you get the best of the Alaskan frontier. You’ll have the option of doing either a northern route or a southern route - depending on which option fits your vacation time the best.

Expect the cruise option to last 7-8 nights, with a 2-7 night land tour - depending on your budget and vacation availability. Some folks want to just see the glorious Denali National Park and Reserve, home to Denali - the largest mountain in North America. Majority of cruise tours take you here, along with some that take you further north into the Fairbanks region.

Other folks who want to be even more adventurous will want to see Kenai Fjords (just south of Anchorage) Katmai (where the bears live), Wrangell-St. Elias (our largest NP at 13 million acres), Lake Clark (see volcanoes!), Gates of the Arctic (central Alaska), Glacier Bay (mainly seen by water/ship) or Kobuk Valley (western land of the sand dunes). There’s EIGHT national parks inside Alaska.

Who does cruise tours?

Holland America Line

Princess Cruise Line

Celebrity Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

You can also find options with Viking Cruise Line, and some other options with premium / adventure cruise lines.

Who do I recommend?

Well, it honestly depends on the following:

• Who is traveling

• What dates are you traveling (because that determines what’s available)

In general, I like Holland America first, then Princess, then Celebrity/Royal Caribbean for cruise tours. HAL and Princess are big in Alaska and they’ve been there for 50+ years (HAL being there for 75+ years) so they have first opportunity for things like the permits to go into Glacier National Park. They also have park rangers come on board for talks and viewing, and I think they do a pretty solid job on land as well.

When doing a cruise tour - keep in mind the following

Alaska is rustic. That’s not a knock on it, but you need to expect things to be self-sufficient, sturdy, and built to last up there - and that includes the amenities.

There’s a couple of hotels I stayed in that are more basic (Westmark - associated with HAL) that are solid but not very flashy. When you’re in Denali and staying at the local cruise lodges - they will be ranging from upscale contemporary to rustic, depending on the room type that you booked.

Dressing to impress isn’t needed on this trip. Dressing for the elements and comfort is more important.

what is happening on a cruise tour?

It’s a tour…on a cruise.

hahaha I crack myself up.

As noted before, a cruise tour is a cruise itinerary with an Alaskan land tour added on either before or after your cruise. There’s a lot of debate on which is more important - do the land part first and relax on the cruise (since a lot of people like to do lots of excursions on the land portion), or go chill on land and do tons at sea.

Whatever works best for your style of travel is the answer. And, your schedule.

Generally, cruise tours are a bit busier because you’ve got a guided tour escorting you around various areas. Honestly, it’s nice to have someone managing the logistics for you since it’s a big big state and not having to deal with car rentals is handy.

Most folks want to do one of the following:

• Do the big Alaskan train excursion from Anchorage to Denali/Talkeetna/Fairbanks (depending on where you’re getting off the train)

• Go take a tour of Denali National Park

• Try to see the mountain of Denali (30% of visitors ever see it due to the immense clouds/atmospheric conditions around it. I had to fly to the top and it was still insane to see)

• Go see a sled dog training farm

• Mine for gold

• See whales (gotta do that on the cruise part - they don’t travel into the heartland)

• Eat more salmon than you can handle

When I was up there, I did

• overnight in Anchorage

• breakfast at the hotel, then hopped on the bus to the train station

• enjoyed a narrated 8 hour train trip to Denali (honestly, relaxing, informative, great lunch, nice bar, glass domed, beautiful views)

• 2 nights at Holland America’s Denali base - with a small village, lodging, Princess lodging and dining for those guests (since they are sister ships), the 5 hour tour into Denali National Park (narrated and excellent), and a small plane excursion to fly to the top of Denali mountain - which is still the coolest and absolute scariest thing I’ve ever done (had to wear oxygen masks! I was worried the weather would destroy our plane! But it was immense and awe inspiring and I understand why the mountain features so prominently in the local Native American cultures)

  • the live show giving a background on the first mountain climbers of Denali was a bit too cheesy for me, but the food was pretty decent

• 3 hour bus tour to Fairbanks with a couple of side stops in local towns (Chena)

• 2 nights overnight at Fairbanks with excursions on the Fairbanks Discovery Riverboat and the Gold Mine #8

  • this is where I tell you I expected this to be cheesy and meh and it was honestly so well done

    • the mini Athabascan village, the sled dogs, the sea plane, the riverboat, the food, the mine (I also slapped the famous Oil Line!) - solid experience would 100% recommend

  • We took a local bus out to the North Pole to visit Santa’s house and it was the cutest thing ever and the best Santa Claus experience I’ve ever had, and I’m literally the Grinch. I cried.

  • Had some great barbecue and Greek food on some venturing around downtown Fairbanks with fellow travelers

• Flew home from Fairbanks Airport

It was busy from morning to evening, but it was an incredible experience.

That, and other things, will make up your cruise tour.
Then! Depending on the cruise line - you’ll board the ship in Seward (about a couple hours south of Anchorage, a better port stop than Anchorage for ship needs) and head south. Or, you’ll go north from Seattle/Vancouver BC and do some of these when you get off the ship.

What if I don’t have that much time to give to this trip?

you’re doing either a round trip cruise out of Seattle or out of Vancouver, and it will depend on your travel dates as what’s the shortest amount of time sailing.

See some glaciers! Visit our most remote state capital if it’s a port stop for you (Juneau)

Usually folks will do a stop or stops at:

• Sitka - Sitka’s colorful past is a unique blend of native Tlingit culture and Russian history. In 1867, when the United States purchased Alaska from the Russians, the transfer ceremony was held in Sitka, and Sitka became Alaska’s first capital city.

  Accessible only by air or sea, Sitka offers incredible scenery, fishing, hiking, abundant wildlife, and Alaska’s most culturally rich history and community.

• Ketchikan - get that salmon and walk the boardwalk! Very fun and colorful town

• Icy Strait - Nestled against the base of White Alice Mountain, Hoonah is the largest Tlingit village in Alaska. The town is located on Chichagof Island, about 30 miles west of Juneau along Icy Strait in the Inside Passage. The Huna, a Tlingit tribe, have lived in the Icy Strait area for thousands of years. In 1912, the Hoonah Packing Co. built a large salmon cannery north of town. The cannery operated on and off under different ownership until the early 1950s, and it sat shuttered for decades until the local Alaska Native corporation, Huna Totem Corp., purchased and rehabilitated the facility to create the private cruise port now called Icy Strait Point.

• Skagway - home of the White Pass Scenic Railway! A true highlight for so many Alaskan travelers

• Juneau - our most northern state capital and the only one accessible by only sea and air, since it’s on an island!

• Hubbard Glacier - the largest tidewater glacier in North America, continually slowly moving along, at 76 miles long and 6 miles wide!

• Dawes Glacier/Tracy Arm/Endicott fjord - I love fjords and this is a great and majestic water pathway with an impressive glacier at the end - the glacier is 600 feet high and 1 mile wide

• Inside Passage cruising - the inner seaway of the southern panhandle of Alaska, with mountains galore. Majority of all Alaskan cruises will sail up and down through this area, with this as a sea day - but a sea day with tons of scenery. Bring a set of binoculars!

• Haines - near Skagway, a port stop that is done by some cruise lines, a small Tlingit town with a large impact on the Alaskan Gold Rush

• Seward - the entrance to the Kenai Fjords, the port town for Anchorage, and a big part of cruise tours transition north/south. Also, a major stop on the Alaskan Railroad!

Your specific itinerary will determine where you go. But those are a lot of typical cruise port towns and cities!

what do I need to sail? Visas? Passports?

US citizens will need:

• round trip from Seattle requires valid passport OR valid government photo ID AND birth certificate for those 16+ — 0-15 are passport or birth certificate

• round trip from Vancouver BC, or one way cruise? valid US passport only

NOTE if you plan to do an excursion from a US port that crosses into Canada, you must have a valid passport to do this. The White Pass Scenic Railway has an extended option that requires this.

US citizens do not require Visas to enter Canada for tourism under 180 days of stay.

sarah do you book these type of cruises?

yes, the answer is yes.

You can book cruise or cruise tour, depending on your budget and vacation availability. Cruise tours will add 3-7+ days to your trip, depending on your budget and amount of time you can use for that vacation.

Cruise tours will include transportation from place to place - meals (amount varies per what you book) - lodging - and sometimes select excursions too.

Cruises can add on a pre or post cruise stay, and transfers from airport to cruise port.

Best time of year to travel? Depending on what’s going on with your schedule but June - July - August are peak travel times.

Late April/Early May/Late May - weather is transitioning to warm, snow melt is happening, but many areas are gearing back up to full summer strength.

Late September/Early October - weather is transitioning back towards cold, and storms can happen more along the water edges.

• June and July are ideal times for humpback whales spotting, but they can be any time of spring and summer

• Orcas like early May to early June near Juneau, Ketchikan, and Seward

• Salmon start spawning in May and run through the rest of the travel season, Ketchikan and Kodiak are big areas for this

yes I got distracted this summer, probably right about the middle of July when I went sailing about with the family, then had a family member end up in the ICU right after coming home, general car drama that took the entire summer but really took hold the last half, then we started middle school, and here we are, the end of august.

Let’s blame this delay on the loss of muppetvision3D and pizzerizzo and call it that.

BUT WITH THAT ASIDE NOW, LET’S CHAT

I went to Canada! I got to finally use my high school French! I went back to Quebec (last time I was there, I did not know any French). I didn’t lose my parents or child (it did almost happen a couple times), and we had memories to last a lifetime!

What did we do?

We traveled to Boston, MA on the most patriotic of days, July 4, and bobbled about town - visiting the USS Constitution - Harpoon Brewery - playing US Navy themed mini golf - and avoiding the traffic on the Charles River because we have seen fireworks before (we watched them on tv and I fell asleep during them).

THEN!

We boarded the Zuiderdam, one of the Holland America Line Vista class ships (for the LIFE of me, I can’t pronounce Zuiderdam correctly and I am not living up to my Holland name with that fact) and did a 7 night sailing from Boston to Quebec City. We stayed at the Homewood Suites Boston Seaport/Hampton Inn combo, down at the cruise port, so we could have an easy walk with luggage from hotel to cruise - and many other folks did the exact same thing with us.

Prepare yourself for a photo onslaught! Probably a couple parts because this could be too long too quickly! Also lots of exclamation points!

• Charlottetown, PEI

• St Lawrence Seaway x 2 days of travel through it

• Quebec City

Ship Board Fun

Check in was smooth, and the day would have been uneventful but I managed to lose my child about an hour after boarding, and that was not a fun 45 minutes (I did 37 flights of stairs searching for kiddo, who was using his room key to test every single room on deck 5 that was not our room. Thankfully, he listed to the muster drill when we watched the educational film on how to depart the ship, and he reported to the muster station and found my mom. Problem solved!)

I love a Lido deck buffet and while it definitely is the most crowded on arrival day, it was the spot I spent a good chunk of my time for any meals - because we enjoyed the wide variety of options (sushi daily for lunch was our fav) and I honestly am not much of a main dining room person. I just like to slip in and out for meals without a lot of fuss.

This ship also has the Dive-In Cafe, and Room Service, to go along with the multi-level dining room and secondary speciality dining rooms - but I am primarily just a buffet gal.

Stateroom

We had a verandah stateroom on deck 5, starboard/midship - so on the right side of the ship, around the middle. I love the center elevator banks on this ship class, because they are beautiful and have a fun glass elevator that is great for day or night time zoomies.

Our room would hold a total of 3 people, but there were only two of us in it - so separate beds, plus a handy sofa, balcony, and full bathroom.

I had noted for separate beds, but sometimes that gets missed and you know what - it’s an easy fix by your stateroom attendant, and then your kiddo doesn’t get annoyed to share a bed with a parent.

Great selection of on demand movies, handy light switches that can turn off all the lights from your own bed, comfy deck furniture, and a solid bathroom with a real tub/shower combo. This ship hasn’t had a full soft goods/stateroom refurb in a good while, so the furnishings are a little dated. But, everything worked well and I was pleased.

I love a balcony/verandah stateroom. I’ve only stayed in those or inside staterooms and let me tell you - I enjoy being on the balcony. Early mornings, late nights, pulling into port or out of port - it’s relaxing and it’s worth the price upgrade. Plus, they typically have more space, which is nice to have on a ship - and when you want to get away from everyone else and just relax in the quiet - having your own spot to chill in is the best.

Make sure to do a room service breakfast at least once on your cruise. Holland America Line is really nice because they will do a hot breakfast at no additional cost (most cruise lines will just do continental breakfast for free). We did splurge on the steak and eggs - but the complimentary veggie frittata was a pleasant inclusion, along with yogurts/coffee/juices etc. Sipping your coffee on your balcony, while in your robe is delightful (and their robes are great! I bought one in 2018 and still use it today. Holds up well and is worth the cost - plus you get a free monogram — it already had my name on it so I didn’t do that haha)

Your stateroom attendant will drop off reminders and such throughout the cruise, and with HAL, you’re still doing a couple tidying ups a day, in addition to the drop off of paperwork and such. Honestly, I know cruise ships are trying to get away from dropping that stuff off but I love it, and it makes you know what’s happening without having to rely on your phone. Plus, towel animals!

Arrival day = having the luggage covers on your bed so you can unpack without dirtying up your blankets, then storing your luggage under the bed or in the closet so you have space. Lots of closet space, lots of real hangers, metal walls to hang things on if you bring magnet hooks, plus some regular hooks for hanging things, divider curtains for privacy needs, a real desk and a mini fridge (there is a minibar that you can automatically drink items from and your account will get charged for them - sometimes you just need a Coke in the middle of the night).

I will chat about the cruise more, because I can. Eventually I’ll actually post my Alaska cruise post that has been patiently waiting in the drafts for a couple of months, and then who knows what else we shall natter on about.

2026 Destinations open for booking - Disneyland, Universal Orlando Resort, Walt Disney World, and your favorite cruise lines / all-inclusive resorts

Disney Cruise Line is opening their September 2026 - May 2027 itineraries for all Castaway Club members this week, one day at a time, before opening to the general public next week.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando Resort opens up this week, with select nights (typically Wed-Sun but varying) through the end of October, at Universal Studios Florida

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party just had its opening and will be doing select nights through end of October as well, at Magic Kingdom — this is a reminder that both Magic Kingdom AND Universal Studios Florida will close early on party nights, and you must have a party ticket to enjoy the Halloween festivities.

RIP MUPPETS COURTYARD AT DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS

we hardly knew ye - May 1, 1989 - Jun 7, 2025

Yup, yesterday was the last hurrah for this area of Studios, as the portable hedges are now blocking the path into this area - and the last showing of MuppetVision3D and the last pizzas served at PizzeRizzo have been slung.

I am a child of the 80s and 90s, and the Muppets have always been somewhere in my life. I loved Muppet Babies (the theme song is now back in my head again), and adored Muppet Christmas Carol (less so Treasure Island, but it’s still solid) , and grew up with Sesame Street - so there’s always been somewhat of a fondness for the Muppets by me.

You know, I have a strange relationship with this area. Looking back at my photos, I didn’t visit here until my second trip to WDW (though I know I was in the area back in 2015, as I was unsuccessfully trying to find the old Honey I Shrunk the Kids play area, and remember the old Streets of America area just barely - but I never wandered into the Muppets Courtyard until I needed an air conditioned break.

Yes, I was confused at what I was watching, because the show was 3D with lots of in-person gags, felt slightly dated but also mildly entertained me and was stuffed full of bad jokes (which I grew to love), and definitely a big fan of the air conditioning and cushioned seats. I slowly started popping in every other visit, and eventually also realized that PizzeRizzo was actually an insanely good deal if you wanted a small bite to eat without breaking the bank (RIP that kids meal). And, MuppetVision3D was a show that was always a great rest break (real ones know if you can sleep in there or Tiki Room, you were definitely tired).

The best things about PizzeRizzo were the massive amount of indoor and outdoor seating, with great air conditioning (or high level fans if you were outdoors), and easy to access bathrooms.

Was the pizza good? Well, as good as any pizza made by a rat (and at WDW, that’s a high bar when you have Remy there) but it was filling, easy to get, and a place where you could sit as long as you wanted. If you wanted to be more in-depth and check out the decor, and cared about Muppets and corny jokes - it was even better.

Anyways, I think I always wondered why it wasn’t busier around this courtyard, and realized that there were a ton of shops that were never opened (had apparently been closed for years) and the life of this spot was slowly eking away bit by bit. My love for here slowly grew over time, but I’m not going to lie - you couldn’t spend a ton of time in Muppets Courtyard, there just wasn’t enough to do.

Theme parks are a continual source of change, for good or for bad, and the places we love will eventually all disappear.

The Muppets aren’t gone forever from Hollywood Studios - they’re moving across the park to revamp Rock’n’Roller Coaster in 2026. I ride that coaster about 1x every 4-5 years, so I suppose I’m due for another ride next year, since I last rode it in June 2021 with the kiddo.

Monstropolis is taking over this part of the park - as Monsters Inc. fans will be happy to get their own area for love, including a new show (inside the MuppetVision3D theater) and a brand new coaster based on the closet doors scene in the original Monsters Inc. movie. This all comes with the new news this week that the Monsters Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue! dark ride at Disney’s California Adventure will be closing to make way for the west coast Avatar area inside that park. Probably eventually more of Hollywoodland will go as well. Which makes me sad because I do really like the vibes of that area and how chill it is (and the rest break/nap area that is the Animation Academy building!)

I honestly don’t care anything about Monsters Inc. The first film came out my senior year of high school and I saw it, but I have no real love or hate for those characters - they just exist to me. I did really like that ride in DCA (funny story - first time I rode it, I purposely did not try to figure out what type of attraction it was - and my friend Katelynn and I played the game of ‘is it a show or ride’ for the entire wait …when we got to the boarding area we screamed IT’S A RIDE— it is in fact a cute little ride)

Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s California Adventure are my two favorite parks out of both Walt Disney World and Disneyland - I have no idea why, but I think the mishmash of themes, the vague idyllic Hollywood that never was vibes, and a more chil atmosphere that never feels as crowded as Magic Kingdom/Disneyland/Epcot - make them my fav parks. Maybe that’s why I feel this change a little more deeply than I expected. I think the Hollywood theming is actually my favorite part of both parks (though I love the Grizzly Peak area and wandering through the redwoods)

Anyways, this is my tribute to a part of a park that I loved, not obsessively, but enjoyed my moments (and foods), and I am glad I like to take photos, so it can live on in my memories and terabytes forever.

• Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida has dates! Running mainly Wednesday - Sunday nights (schedule varies) Aug 29 - Nov 2, 2025

  • New to HHN - Five Nights at Freddy’s and Fallout will make their debut in the ten scare houses

  • Scare zone themes not announced yet, but Nightmare Fuel show will return, along with food, drinks, and more

  • Packages with HHN tickets now available - it’s a great event - definitely geared for older teens and adults - not recommended for littles

• The official last day of Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Belle in Magic Kingdom have been announced and they will be July 7, 2025. The official details of Piston Peak National Park (the Cars replacement for that area) have been released and it’s a definite that you’ll be able to do a full walk around the area as it will help lead into Villains Land.

  • The theming looks pretty cool - and as a big fan of Radiator Springs, I think that it will look spectacular. I’m sad to lose the island, but so it goes these days. I’ll put up a nice tribute next month.

I write this to you, as someone who has survived elementary school graduation as a parent in these last 30 days. It’s been a busy and rather hectic month with school ending, school parties, and other odds and ends, but we made it - it’s summer, and I can relax before I end up disappearing off on some vacation myself. Plus, my Oilers are back in the Stanley Cup finals, and my driver won the Monaco GP last weekend, so it was a good end to this crazy month.

where’s everyone going?

Need some vacation inspo for yourself? Here’s a brief overview of what I’m currently quoting and booking right now, or what just traveled - so you can get some ideas.

• Disney Treasure / Disney Cruise Line - had a big group go do a multigenerational trip on this ship this month, with an eastern 7 night Caribbean sailing, including a stop at the new Disney Cruise Line island, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Second Wish class ship - but with an adventurous theme, deep bright colors, Haunted Mansion Parlor lounge, and all the tasty chicken tendies one can stuff inside their face.

  

• Rotterdam / Holland America Line - had some travelers go sail Rotterdam to Amsterdam, with a host of Baltic countries and water in between on a 2 week adventure. Highlights included a prestay in Rotterdam and staying on the previous HAL Rotterdam ship, which has now turned into a static hotel.

  

• Pop Century / Walt Disney World - a family is enjoying a relaxing two week stay with lots of water park action this month, to kick off the end of school and the start of summer. The Park Hopper Plus ticket option means their trip has a ton of water park days for the kids to splash around on, while also giving the benefits of flexibility with their park visits. Lots of pool days on this trip, and a bounceback promo to save a little more on the trip cost.

  

  
  

• Disney Dream / Disney Cruise Line - there’s a family headed out there in a couple weeks, finally getting the kids onto a ship, with a fun itinerary that involves Cozmuel and Disney’s Castaway Cay, along with some very important sea days for relaxation.

  

• Cabo San Lucas - Mexico - a couple is debating on a quick trip to Cabo for next month, good heads up for all folks to note - the beaches are typically not swimmable in Cabo due to riptide currents, so majority of all resorts are pool focused.

  

• Sandals Grenada / Grenada - honeymooners looking at a rondoval (unique mini house style vacation getaway) with butler service on the island of Grenada. A private pool sanctuary is a great way to just get some quiet time while also having 24/7 butler service for everything you’d ever want.

  

  
  

• Epic Universe - Universal Orlando Resort - travelers who were there on Grand Opening Day had a pretty sweet time. The park tickets have been initially limited so it wasn’t crazy, and they managed to do everything they want (besides Ministry of Magic, which wasn’t cooperating that day) from park opening at 8am to 2pm. It doesn’t have a lot of shade right now, as the foliage grows, but it does have shaded queues for everyone - and is a beautiful beautiful addition to the Orlando parks.

  

what’s the news on what this month

• Walt Disney World has the Stay Longer, Save more promo still running and covering this summer - just priced some Polynesian Resort stays for mid July with a $1500 savings on a theme park view club level room for 2 adults and 1 child - and let me tell you, out of all the stays that I’ve had at WDW, my Polynesian theme park view club level room stay is still the one that I think back on the most.

  

  
  

• HAGRID’S MAGICAL CREATURES MOTORBIKE ADVENTURE IS NOW INCLUDED WITH EXPRESS PASS - yall we have been manifesting this for years and it’s finally come true. Enjoy it when you’re inside Islands of Adventure.

  

  
  

• The official date of the brand new nighttime parade at Magic Kingdom - Disney Starlight, was just announced to open on July 20, and run nightly from here on out at the park. If you love nighttime sparkly parades (and do I ever miss the Main Street Electrical Parade - I managed to catch it at both WDW and Disneyland!) - this is going to be a perfect add on to the park.

  

• NEW SHOWS AT HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS! Villains Unleashed opened in the previous Lightning McQueen Racing Academy spot, next to Rock’n’Roller Coaster, and The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure replaced the previously closed Little Mermaid show - both are funny and beautiful and very very air conditioned.

  

• Disneyland Resort is now celebrating their 70th anniversary! Paint the Night - the truly phenomenal nighttime parade, is back and in Disneyland Park, while both Disneyland Park and Disney’s California Adventure are celebrating with a great ticket offer this summer - do 3 or 4 park days for $100-120+ a day (add on park hopper or Lightning Lane) and have a whole summer to use the tickets! I’ve got folks who are moving out to that area, and are already using that ticket to get some magic into their lives this summer. Ticket offer runs May 16 - Aug 14, if you’re headed out west and want to spend several days enjoying the parks.

  

  
  

• EPIC UNIVERSE OPENED yes you thought I was done shouting about it, but you’re wrong. While folks think that the newest Wizarding World is the big draw, honestly I want to make sure you end up at How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk and Dark Universe, and really get blown away by the must do Hiccup’s Wing Gliders coaster and Monsters Unchained dark ride. Go. Do. Both. Plus - catch The Untrainable Dragon show and then Le Cirque Arcanus in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic. incredible shows AND air conditioning and seats? Sign me up in the summer months.

  

• Disney Cruise Line has a Disney Visa offer on select cruises traveling this August and September - pay the cruise with your Disney Visa, and you can get a $250 on board credit. Disney Visa guests can also get 30% off inside/oceanview/verandah guarantee room rates that are traveling this summer through September 2025 - gotta pay it in full at time of booking, but if you need a last minute trip, there’s a variety of sailings available.

  

  
  

• Sandals Resorts has a very perfect jewel on its hands with Sandals St Vincent and the Grenadines - it’s a gorgeous resort with food focused on the island’s culture, and also just great views of the ocean. The tinier resorts do mean you’re typically routing through Charlotte/Atlanta/Miami to get there via American Airlines or Delta - but it’s a worthwhile hoop to jump through.

  

• Alaskan Cruises - again for the third year in a row, folks are headed up north to see our 49th state and really really hyped for it. I always recommend a passport for these cruises, because some ports can have excursions that venture into Canada, and you’ll need a passport for those (the White Pass Scenic Railway in Skagway for example, if you want to do the long train tour)

Yes, you weren’t forgotten. It’s been a busy month-ish, and typing about has been last on my mind, but I am back and alive. I’ve driven about 3,000 miles (1200 in one week) since we last chatted, and it’s been a lot lot lot of things going on, across a lot of states. Such is life nowadays.

Celebrations ahoy!

We celebrated our 13th anniversary recently, with some great hiking about in the Red River Gorge area of eastern Kentucky. If you’re not familiar - it’s a beautiful, mountainous area of the western Appalachians, and a great getaway area for those who love to hike, fish, kayak, or just head back into a quiet and more scenic area. As a lifelong Appalachian (appa-latch-an) from southeastern Ahia/western West Virgina- I had not been down to there but had always heard about it, and it was a delightful weekend away.

RRG is about 60 minutes southeast of Lexington, KY or 1.5 hours southwest of Huntington, WV. Sometimes it’s just nice to get out and about in the backwoods and hills, and it was a refreshing visit.

We enjoyed our cabin, complete with a record player (and some older records to enjoy and rocked a lot of ole Tyler Childers in ode to being in his neck-ish of the woods for once, instead of him playing up around us when he first started out). Scenic views, 4WD needed for that hill, hot tub and movies, cooking celebratory steaks - a good quiet peaceful time.

We spent a glorious day hiking about Natural Bridge State Park, with some great food spots visited as well. I definitely recommend the Original Trail up to the Natural Bridge, and then hiking the Balanced Rock Trail (partially closed but still a nice mini hike), Battleship Rock Trail (we did it going down vs coming up that incline), and the very easy Laurel Ridge trail (must do - easy and flat but runs from Natural Bridge to the Lovers Leap lookout) — this can be accessed by the Skylift if inclines and tons of steps aren’t your thing. Be prepared for lots of steps. We in dem hills yall.

Grabbing a bite of food or drink?

Great choices include:

Miguel’s Pizza - located close to the Natural Bridge State Park in Slade, KY

Per my husband, this is the iconic place in the area, and the most well known, so you might as well stop on by and grab a bite of pizza, local craft beers, and sit inside or outside. There’s a basketball court and spots for the kids to bop around and dogs are welcome outside if polite and well-behaved. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner served - typically open 7am-10pm daily. I would have taken more pics, but we ran into friends from back home and chatted for awhile, while sipping a custom brew collab between Country Boy Brewing and Miguel’s - so you get a photo and that’s it. Nice big pizzas available here!

Toad’s BARn and Grill - located a little up the road in Stanton, KY

You’ll pull up here and wonder if you actually pulled up to someone’s house, and don’t feel wrong about it, because there’s a house rental and RV park first, and the BARn is hidden back (be careful on the one lane bridge in). Once you walk up and over to the BARn, you’ll see tons of seating, full service bar and grill, live music weekly, and open air vibes. Good grub to nosh on and lots of craft beer. Open daily, 11am-9pm. They are also big Country Boy fans with a ton of their beers on tap.

Thatcher BBQ Company - also located in Slade, KY

Need some BBQ in your tum-tum? Well, Thatcher’s will fill you up and then some. I’m always a fan of any place with Ale-81 on fountain soda, and they’re pretty big fans of Country Boy as well (full disclosure - my husband works for CBB and these all used to be his accounts he visited! I’ve never been to them before this time though).

They smoke their own BBQ and make a variety of their own sauces, along with a live music venue / bar, and they’re located right in a spot where you can do a lot of shopping for other local items - so it’s a great way to spend a couple of hours. If you’re hungry and need filled - get the BBQ nachos and you won’t eat again for a week. Incredibly massive portion!

Finally, if you need some coffee - visit Daniel Boone Coffee Shop in Slade, KY

Good spot for breakfast, but most importantly, if you just need a hit of caffeine, make sure to walk up to the coffee window vs the food window, and bypass the breakfast line. Lots of interesting items for sale if you’re looking to take something unique home, or if you just need to grab breakfast, lunch, or a quick dinner. Mon-Fri 8a-8pm, Sat & Sun 7a-8p. If you need some incredibly fine bourbons, they can also hook you up, no matter how deep your pocket goes.

Screenshot only - but there is a gas station with the most incredible pork tenderloin biscuit that I’ve ever had, simply melt in your mouth, and because of this - you should get gas and a biscuit at the Park’n’Save just off the Bert T Combs Mountain Hwy and Campton Rd, and good god almighty get those biscuits.

and that was my weekend away and my review of hanging out down in eastern Kentucky.

NOW TO PIVOT TO SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

Travel insurance.

Yes, the thing that no one ever wants to talk about but it’s something that you actually should talk about.

— up front statement as always, I am NOT a licensed insurance salesperson. Everything here is from education I’ve received from travel insurance suppliers and experience over the last eight years— very specific details aren’t covered here, as you need to review your travel insurance options to see what the coverage details/terms and conditions are.

Usually when you think travel insurance, you think getting sick, but there’s a lot of weird things that can pop up once you book your sweet vacay, or when you’re traveling, that end up being a huge pain and can derail all those great plans.

• unexpected loss of job or work requires you to miss your trip

• unexpected health issue (surgery, illness, family member illness)

• weather delays/transit delays

• loss of baggage while traveling

• hurricanes and more derailing your plans

• and more!

Travel insurance is something I want to be a waste of money for every single person I have who books it. I don’t want an issue to pop up, and derail your plans. But, having that peace of mind is important. And that’s why all travel advisors recommend travel insurance. Because we can’t foretell the future.

Every year, I read in the news about travelers that didn’t purchase insurance, and something came up, and they are out $5,000/$10,000/$20,000+ or more, as they have to figure out how to get back home, deal with medical issues out of country, and more. I personally know folks who have had medical issues out of country, and some had insurance and some didn’t. You can guess how bad the issue was for the folks that didn’t have it, it was not pretty.

Most of the time, if something happens when you just have your deposit down - you can get a lot of the money back, or even all of it. But, travel insurance really is for coming in clutch when you are past that final payment, and deeply invested into this trip.

When should you purchase travel insurance?

Ideally for the majority of travel insurances, you should insure your trip when you place the deposit. Some travel insurances will have coverage for pre-existing conditions if you insure the trip right at time of deposit. Others will cover pre-existing conditions if you add the insurance up to the final payment.

Typically, you need to have added it either with your deposit, or before your final payment, for insurances that are added to your package.

Separately purchased travel insurance policies, the majority want you to have purchased it up to around 10 days prior to travel departure, but there are some that you can purchase up to the day prior to travel.

Note - if there’s a named event (hurricane, storm, civil unrest etc) and you purchase your insurance after this event has started, you might not get protection for that event as it’s something you already know about. Check the details!

Some insurances only cover you while you are physically on vacation (cruise ships insurance usually just covers you while you’re checked into the ship), while others cover you from start of travel to destination all the way to return home. ALWAYS CHECK DETAILS.

What are the basic types?

Cancel For Any Reason

• This option means you can cancel your trip after depositing for any reason whatsoever, and receive either cash back or a travel voucher for the amount paid, for a future trip with that destination/supplier. A lot of cruise or all-inclusive package insurances will have a CFAR option that allows either the whole amount paid towards the trip or a percentage, to be held as a future cruise credit for a future cruise, if you cancel after final payment due date up to boarding. Note that typically, you’re not getting the cost of the insurance policy back if it’s a cash back.

Cancel For Covered Reason

• Most insurances will let you cancel for a covered reason to get cash back - covered reasons are specified in their terms and conditions of the insurance policy. Typically you’ll find that many will state work issues that prevent you from traveling, travel delays as you are traveling to the departure of the trip, severe illness that prevents you from participating in your trip for you or a member of your party - those are covered reasons.

Travel Credit

• Some insurances give you a travel credit or voucher, in the amount of money that you paid for your trip - with the ability to use it towards a future vacation with that travel supplier. Note that many will specify you need to rebook the trip AND travel on the new trip within a specific timeframe after cancellation.

Cash Back

• The most expensive option, but if you’re someone who wants to not have to worry about the trip, looking for a cash back option in travel insurance is worth it. The cost of the insurance policy is always non-refundable, but you can cancel your trip up to a specific time frame and receive a refund of your trip to the card(s) used to pay for the trip.

Here is a big thing about travel insurance - you need to know if it’s a primary (will step in automatically and cover things up front) or if it’s one that will provide compensation after your trip. Most of the time, they help you get made whole after the issue has occured. Some insurances will expect you to cover the costs up front and then they will refund you when you file a claim afterwards. If you’re looking at health insurance coverage, making sure that the insurance steps in as a primary coverage is SO important!

ALWAYS KEEP RECEIPTS DOCUMENTS ETC. You want a travel insurance that provides 24/7 coverage, an emergency travel contact number that can be reached worldwide toll-free, and one that steps in immediately when the poo hits the fan. You’ll need to file that claim and having documents to help with the claim is most important.

How much is travel insurance?

Well that depends, because typically it’s based on either a flat fee per person, a percentage of your trip, or a cost based on age.

When booking and combined with your trip in one package:

• Cruise insurances typically are a percentage of the cruise fare, so the more expensive your vacation - the more expensive the insurance. Usually it’s around 8% for many cruise lines

• All-inclusives in packages usually have a flat fee, based on cost of package, with a base cost for travel credit or cash back options, or just during travel coverage only. Expect $50-500 a person, depending on the choice you pick.

• Walt Disney World is currently $95 per adult 18+ with every child on the package, ages 0-17, automatically included, and Disneyland is the same.

• Universal Orlando Resort does a CFAR option that is not insurance, but allows you to cancel for refund (minus the cost per person for the CFAR policy), up to 4pm the day prior to check in. It’s now around $50ish a person

• This is a non-exhaustive list, as there’s a lot of travel destinations, with unique options for insurance coverage

What are some common travel insurances with destinations I work with on the daily?

Here’s links to the insurance policies for a lot of common destinations - they will have links for specific coverage by state (this is all geared for US travelers, other countries may have their own options and inclusions). Non-exhaustive list, because I only have so much strength in these fingers to type:

• Walt Disney World - Disneyland - resort packages are the only option that can have insurance added up to final payment. Ticket only purchases or room only bookings are not eligible.

• Universal Orlando Cancel for Any Reason Option - scroll on down to the Travel Protection section

• Disney Cruise Line Vacation Protection Plan - note their CFAR inclusion means this: Receive a future cruise credit up to 75% of the cancellation fee amount to apply toward a future Disney Cruise Line sailing if you need to cancel for any reason not covered by the insurance portion of the plan. Credits are valid for one year from issue date, are not transferable, and have no cash value. Certain restrictions apply. This benefit is provided by Disney Cruise Line. This is that notation of covered reasons vs cancel for any reason!

• Royal Caribbean Cruise Line - note that to get the cancellation refund, the entire trip must cancel vs just one person on the stateroom.

  • If you’re traveling with friends in the same stateroom, sometimes going with a separate travel insurance supplier is a better idea, because if one person bails on the trip - you still have to pay for a minimum of 2 people in stateroom, and loss of a member means the price per person may increase.

• Funjet All in One Travel Protection - I use FJ a lot for various all-inclusives, since I’m more Midwestern and they price well with the folks I send to Mexico/Caribbean. They have cash back CFAR, travel credit CFAR, and just during travel insurance - which doesn’t give you that return on what you paid, but just covers you during the trip

• Arch RoamRight Travel Insurance - Arch is who I work with when I have folks that want more specific and higher levels of coverage, or they are doing a combination of things (Walt Disney World/Universal Orlando combo trips, or cruise + theme park trips, or other travel ideas) and want to cover the entire trip.

  • Arch will cover you from the start of the trip (when you leave to start your travel to destination) to the return date. You can choose to insure the entire cost of the trip, or you can choose just travel coverage only (type in $0 as trip cost) for a lower price. Pricing here is based on age of traveler, state of residence, and cost of trip.

  • Full disclosure, that’s my personal link I use to quote folks for Arch - and I do earn commission on your travel insurance purchases. However, I use Arch to cover myself, and I love their excellent customer service and communication, which is why I stick with them for my clients.

  • With separate travel insurance like Arch - you want to insure the NON REFUNDABLE parts of your trip. Typically you don’t include the cost of your airfare, as travel credits are given (or cash refund, depending on the type of airfare you booked). Refundable items you don’t insure, as you will get that cost back if it’s cancelled.

Something that folks ask is - do I, your travel advisor, file your travel insurance claim?

The answer is no. I am not the party that was negatively affected. I can help you with getting the right start for collecting info for submitting a claim, but I can’t work on your claim on your behalf. I have no control on if claims are approved or denied.

What if I don’t want insurance - what are my options?

Well, it’s not mandatory. You don’t have to purchase insurance to go on vacation.

If it’s just a cancellation - typically you have cancellation penalties after final payment. You will get a percentage back of what you paid, based on the cancellation schedule for that destination, listed on your confirmation with that reservation.

Off the top of my head:

Walt Disney World/Disneyland Resort packages- cancellation of trip 30 or more days prior to check in date will refund all monies paid to the card used for payment. Cancellation 29-2 days prior to check in will have a $200 penalty and refund of remaining balance. Cancellation within 24 hours of check in will be non-refundable. Expect refunds usually within 5-10 business days.

Universal Orlando Resort packages- cancellation 45-7 days prior to check in date will be a $200 cancellation fee and refund of remaining amount to card used to pay for trip. Cancellation within 6 days of check in will also forfeit 1 night cost of room + taxes. Expect 5-6 weeks for refund.

Cruises - cancellation schedule varies but expect cruise fare refund of either 75%/50%/25%/0% depending on how close to final payment you cancelled, or how close to sail date you cancelled. Taxes, port fees, and prepaid gratuities, will automatically refund back to card used for payment. Check on any other purchases you made through your cruise planner, usually they will refund back as well.

What if my trip was affected and flights were missed/days were missed? What do I do since I didn’t have insurance?

Well - you’ll need to talk directly with the airline and see if credit can be issued for the missed flight, if you can be rebooked to a new flight. Sometimes destinations might still refund you if it was a big issue, but never count on that, or being able to extend the trip (because they might not have room for new dates immediately after).

What if I miss my trip because of X Y Z that kept me from traveling and I didn’t have insurance?

Welp. In the words of my 9th/10th grade biology teacher, you’re SOL. Best of luck! Sometimes social media asks can help but don’t guarantee yourself that it’s the only answer. If you didn’t purchase insurance, the destination does not have an obligation to help you “just because.”

What about my health insurance? Won’t it work instead of travel insurance? It’s really good!

Health insurance is not travel insurance. And if you’re out of country or in a remote area - it won’t be very helpful if you need repatriated back to the USA, or to the nearest major hospital because you need an emergency surgery. Having a travel insurance that will front the cost so you can be admitted to the hospital is great.

I don’t claim to be an insurance agent - but those are some of the general basics for travel insurance that everyone should know when considering adding it to a trip. For very specific details, please contact the insurance company directly via their customer service numbers.

In general, I want everyone to have it. Not because of any big financial desire to make more money (I am compensated by all trips I book with commission from every destination I sell). I honestly just don’t want you to be stuck, or have something bad happen and it becomes a ruinous experience. You can purchase travel insurance from a lot of places - please just take the time to read the policy, and to make sure it’s a good option for your needs.

Universal Orlando Resort just opened their 2026 bookings for packages!

All packages (at this moment of posting) are 3 day ticket length + room or longer. Shorter options will be available at a later date.

Park hopping to and from Epic Universe will be available in 2026 - and Volcano Bay water theme park will be closed at the end of October 2026 through March 2027 for a big refurbishment.

Go sail out of Port Canaveral, FL - and Universal Orlando will pick you up from the cruise ship and bring you to your Universal resort (Aventura, Cabana Bay, or Terra Luna resorts are available for this promotion), do 1-3 days, with park tickets, and then Universal will take you to Orlando MCO for your flight home. If you didn’t know, I completed my first The Buck Fifty recently, back near where I’m from, in southeast Ohio, and that race was a delight but also kicked my butt from here to eternity.

It’s a 150 mile relay race that covers 16 hours (winning time this year) to 29 hours (final finishing team), with 30 segments, 5 or 10 person teams, and 3-6 segments per runner (ranging 3-9 miles each). You run around in a 5 person group with (hopefully a van driver or you yourself are the driver), and just relay the GPS tracker from checkpoint to checkpoint until you get to the end. The race doesn’t stop until you complete the whole thing, so you can run literally at any time, day or night.

Lots of fun, trail/road/gravel/city/state park/rural segments, and no sleep ‘til you’re finished (2 hours is not enough as I learned, when I was up for 30+ hours). All proceeds support drug prevention for the youth of Southeastern Ohio - and it’s a fantastically run and supported event. There were 115 teams this year!

With that being said, chatting up some cruise talk this week!

I know what you’re thinking - Sarah, why all about cruises, I thought you just did Walt Disney World.

WELL (hands on hips emoji) cruises have surprisingly been the thing I’ve been booking most for about a year and a half (yes, I too, was surprise to see that increase), so I’m just giving what the people want. And, yes, I do more than WDW!

Unlike with repeat stays at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, or Universal Orlando, when you’re a repeat traveler on a cruise line, you will gain status with the cruise’s frequent traveler program.

Just like regular hotels, cruises love when folks come back again and again, and they will throw you some extras to entice you to continue to give them money. I’m going to do a short overview of the big 7 and their frequent cruiser programs (DCL, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Holland America, Princess, Celebrity, MSC) that I’ve been primarily booking for folks. So, now you know, and here we go!

Please note, all details are accurate as of date of publication (if you’re reading this in the future).

As always, if you’re thinking of going cruising - check in with me, and let’s see what we can find that works best for you.

Disney Cruise Line - Castaway Club

• Overview here - name of their frequent cruiser program - your status is based on amount of cruises completed. You are automatically enrolled after completing your first cruise

• Tiered into Silver (1-4 cruises completed), Gold (5-9 cruises), Platinum (10-24 cruises), Pearl (25+ cruises completed)

• Varying benefits - but the biggest deal is that you have earlier booking on new itineraries, (1-4 days prior to opening to general public), and earlier booking windows for on board activities and excursions. First time cruisers can book these at 75 days prior to sailing, Silver is 90/Gold 105/Platinum 120/Pearl 123 - only people who can book any earlier are Concierge sailers, and they are at 130 days (doesn’t matter if you have any status or not). You will also have earlier access to online check in (important for those who want early port arrival times). You will also get a welcome gift upon arrival each sailing, with different gifts for different tiers, and once you reach Gold, you’ll start getting some on board discounts, and Platinum and above will receive a free dinner at Palo/Palo Steakhouse for each person, 1x a cruise.

  • you do need to be paid in full to book these, which means your payment due date may be earlier than the actual payment due date

  • not an extensive on board program, but folks who have reached Gold and higher are fairly loyal to DCL at that point

  • Recent update is that you will lose your status gained if you don’t complete a sailing at least one time, every five years.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line - Crown and Anchor Society

• Visit overview here - based on amount of days spent on board, not amount of cruises - each day = 1 point. Bonus points awarded for suites

• You’ll automatically be enrolled after completing a first cruise, but you can pre-enroll once booked

• Tiered into Gold (3 points), Platinum (30), Emerald (55), Diamond (80), Diamond Plus (175), and Pinnacle (700) - with extras coming every 350 points after you reach Pinnacle

  • You’ll get a recognition ceremony on board for reaching Pinnacle

• Extensive discounts kick in at Emerald, but Gold and Platinum get some nice discounts

  • lots of coupons for 50% drinks, starting at Gold (so, after you complete a first cruise), but once you hit Emerald, you start getting daily free drinks (alcohol/non alcohol) loaded to your account

  • Internet discounts, dining discounts, lounge access, discounts on balcony/suites, in-room amenities discounts and inclusions

    • Overall, not a bad program if you’re looking for one to be loyal to for several years

    • Status does not expire

Carnival Cruise Line - VIFP (Very Important Fun Person)

• Starts with enrolling prior to your first cruise, so it’s important to do that! You can get some discounts on sailing prior to enrolling, but make sure you get signed up to start accruing points (1 point per day)

• Blue (prior to sailing), Red (first cruise - 24 points), Gold (25-74), Platinum (75-199), and Diamond (200+ points)

• Red and Gold don’t get you a whole lot (1 complimentary 1.5L water bottle per sailing, and 1 free drink per sailing), but they start adding up once you hit Platinum (so, probably after 11 seven night cruises). Priority check in / boarding/ debarkation/reservations, free drinks, discounted or free laundry, and some nice events.

• Status does not expire

  • Overall, not a bad list of things, but you’ve got to commit to Carnival to get stuff, so it depends on if you really love them.

EDIT! As of June 18, 2025

- a MAJOR update is coming to CCL’s status program, as it’s transforming into Carnival Rewards in June 2026

this program is based on the amount you spend on your cruise - purchases made on board - spending with their branded credit card

earn stars, and you’ll earn rewards that you can use towards items on board and more

BUT

you’re based on the level you achieve by your spend levels starting June 1, 2026 through May 31, 2028, which creates your level for 2028-30, while you work on earning again —- which is a bit complicated and using their links to review is a little easier as I’m still digesting this info released today.

Everyone resets to a different level based on a two year period. Program is more like hotel/airline status achievement.

From reading comments on social media posts - Carnival fans aren’t taking this well. Time will tell over the next year how it all goes.

Holland America Line - Mariner Society

• Visit their overview here - based on days spent at sea, but you’ll also get a bonus day for every $300 you spend on board during your sailing, or by having a suite

• 1-5 Star Mariner, with 1 (1 cruise completed), 2 (30 day credits), 3 (75 day credits) 4 (200 day credits) and 5 (500+ day credits)

• You’ll get a recognition ceremony on board for reaching 5 Star Mariner

• Benefits are actually pretty solid, welcome reception is nice, small gift each visit, option for on board credit (amount will vary depending on cruise/stateroom) when you book an itinerary within 90 days of itinerary launch, but once you reach 4/5 star, there’s some really nice inclusions, so your commitment actually did pay off. The free laundry and pressing is super nice, along with free dining, 1 free thermal suite pass, the wine tasting, free 3rd/4th guests on request for cruises 14 days or less, discounted dining/coffee bars/drinks.

• Nice benefit is that everyone in the same stateroom will receive the benefits of the highest status person in that room (my parents are 5 Star Mariners so that’s handy when I sail with them)

  • Overall, if you’re a fan of their ships, it’s a worthwhile gift back. Also, with any ships owned by the Carnival Corporation (Carnival, Holland America, Princess, etc) - if you own at least 100 stock shares, you’ll get on board credit each sailing (just need to send the form in ahead of time each sailing). That is actually a great way to get that stock purchase rebated back to you if you love sailing (amount varies by length of cruise/cruise line)

Princess Cruise Line - Captain’s Circle

• Visit overview here

• Based on days at sea, awarded after completion of first cruise

• Gold (1 cruise completed), Ruby (3 cruises or 30 days at sea), Platinum (5 cruises or 50 cruise days), Elite (15 cruises or 150 cruise days)

  • Your medallion will come with a different color, depending on your status

• Access to new itineraries early

• Not an extensive list of amenities, mainly benefits for Elite (priority embarkation/debarkation/tenders), complimentary wine tasting, complimentary mini-bar setup 1 time during sailing / afternoon tea in stateroom daily, canapes in your stateroom on formal nights, and laundry services

  • More for folks who simply enjoy the cruises, and care less about on board status

Celebrity Cruise Line - Captain’s Club

• Visit benefit overview here

• Six levels based on points accrued - you can earn points from sailing per night, as each room type gives you a certain amount of points

  • Inside/Oceanview = 2 points/night

  • Verandah/Infinite Verandah = 3 points/night

  • Concierge/AquaClass = 5 points/night

  • Sky Suite, Aqua Sky Suite, Magic Carpet Sky Suite, & Sunset Sky Suite = 8 points/night

  • Celebrity, Signature, Horizon, & Royal Suite = 12 points/night

  • Reflection, Penthouse & Edge Villa = 18 points/night

    • So, a 7 night cruise can earn you between 14-126 points, depending on your room type

      • You can also earn points at home from doing some watching of various videos/surveys (only cruise line I know that does this)

• Preview (prior to cruising), Classic (2-149 points), Select (150-299), Elite (300-749), Elite Plus (750-2,999), Zenith (3,000+) are the status categories

  • Depending on your preferred room type, you can start racking points up pretty quickly

  • You do start getting discounts once you have achieved Classic, but the Elites and higher will really be racking things up - expect to reach that within 8-10 cruises.

  • Elites and higher having an unlimited daily cocktail hour from 5-7pm (in most bars/lounges - some excluded) is actually pretty impressive - there’s a noted list of drinks, but that’s a nice bonus

  • Overall, if you like their vibe (more upscale, adult focused, with elegant modern takes on cruising) - then this is a good program for you with some discounts that will start immediately after your first cruise.

  • Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Silversea all have a status match policy that lets you jump up to the equivalent tier, since they are all under the same umbrella - visit more details here - Silversea is their highest end brand, with exceptional service, small ships, and many unlimited inclusions

MSC Cruise Line - Voyagers Club

• MSC is starting to make its way into the American cruise market, primarily an Italian line, with very European focus on service and vibes, but noted for very low pricing when compared to other more known cruise lines in the US

• They have put together a pretty extensive list of options for benefits that start after your first cruise

• Visit the benefits here

• Interestingly, MSC has been doing a status match with any cruise line, hotel chain - and it’s an extensive list they work with

• They do an automatic 5% discount on travel for their Voyagers members once you have reached their first tier

  • Welcome (pre-cruise), Classic (1-2,199 points), Silver (2,200-4,299 points), Gold (4,300-9,999 points), Diamond (10,000-24,999 points), Blue Diamond (25,000+ points)

  • Points are earned based on the type of cruise category booked (Bella, Fantastica, Aurea, MSC Yacht Club), the length of your cruise, and any prepaid onboard services.

  • Bonus points can be earned by:

    • MSC Voyagers Exclusives – double membership points if booking 12+ months in advance

    • MSC World Cruise – triple membership points

    • FCC Booking – double membership points for FCC onboard booking

    • Subscription – 500 points if registering after 3 months after disembarkation; 100 points when registering / updating contact details with confirmed booking 72 hrs. prior departure

    • Birthday - 200 points for cruise booked three months after Members’ birthday

    • MSC Voyagers Selection / Early Access to new Programs - 700 points not automatically earned

• MSC is starting to jump more into the market, and I have been getting a little more requests for them (if you are a Formula1 fan, you’ll see they are all over the tracks this season)

• They have a reasonable amount of discounts that pop up after your first cruise, and usually kick in high gear around hitting mid tier status

• I will note, you can lose your status with MSC if you’re not sailing at least 1 time every 5 years with them.

So, which is the best one for you?

Well, not every cruise line is for everyone, but there is a cruise line for you.

In general, I think Royal/Celebrity/Holland America/MSC have the best benefits for frequent cruisers.

If you are someone who only sails once a year or every couple of years, status isn’t something you’re going to be interested in, and I wouldn’t recommend a line just for status building. Just think of it as a nice perk for a vacation that you like to revisit.

If you care less about cruise status, but would like to splurge for a trip in style - typically booking a concierge room/suite is the way to go for getting immediate bonuses on your vacation.

as a breaking news item, Walt Disney World announced this morning that 2026 bookings for January 1-October 2026 will open starting April 22, 2025

Guests staying at a WDW resort in 2026 (Jan-Oct) can enjoy:

• Free transportation to all parks

• 30 minute early entry to all parks

• Free kids dining plan (ages 3-9) when purchasing dining plans for the whole family

• Free entry to a water park on arrival day during summer 2026 (dates to come later)

• Deluxe and Deluxe villa guests will enjoy Extra Magic Hours after park close on select nights during the week)

• Free standard parking at theme parks and free resort hotel parking

• Ability to charge purchases to your room around the resort

• You can include dining plans to your package to pre-pay your dining choices

• Recreational amenities at the WDW resorts, including themed pools/rec staff activities/character meets/uniquely themed resorts

    • They always have deals going on so it’s more of if you’re a refundable deposit/non refundable deposit/guarantee person in what type of pricing is best for you and your needs

• MSC Cruises

  • MSC World America debuts in April 2025 and it’s pricing insanely well for a brand new ship for 7 night cruises out of Miami - if you’re interested in trying a more European focused cruise line (more reserved service) but a ship that is wanting to battle a bit with Royal Caribbean and NCL - this could be your ship

• Virgin Voyages

  • If you want no kids allowed, Virgin is the place to be, with interesting promos always occurring. You get a lot more inclusions (no speciality dining needs, more drinks included, wifi included) but if you just want a vibe of “Come as You Are” from 18-60+, this is a great cruise line for you.

All-Inclusive Resorts

• Sandals and Beaches resorts are always the ones you see with ads on tv, especially with Beaches Turks and Caicos announcing their Treasure Beach village addition, opening in March 2026 (reservations being taken now!) but if you want a spectacular beach - Beaches Negril is the Beaches you want right now. They have a couple more Beaches resorts coming in the pipeline, and new Sandals Resorts are Sandals St. Vincent (St. Vincent and the Grenadines), Sandals Dunn’s River (Ocho Rios, Jamaica), and Sandals Royal Curaçao (Curaçao). Typically if you’re doing anything that isn’t Jamaica, American Airlines (routed through Charlotte or Miami) are how you’re getting to their further out islands.

  • Usually expect that if you’re not super close to those two airports, you’re going to have a weird layover to get that flight to your destination.

    • They usually always have a nice booking offer going throughout the year, and typically with stays of 7 nights or more, you’re going to get 1 night free and usually some extras.

Let’s consider this an early Sunday post. My musings on the photos released this week…

Epic Universe entrance/Celestial Park

Every land at Epic Universe will be considered a “portal” to a new world.

The main entrance portal is here - the Chronos, with an icon for each land shown.

Tiny writing in gold notes:

And Epic Worlds to fill your dreams.”

Really playing on the “universe” theme here - which I’m a sucker for, I’ve always loved stars, and I have star tattoos, so this really brings me a lot of hope for something I’ll truly love. This is also considered the photo for the Celestial Park portal, which is the main hub, so to speak, in a hub and spoke array of the park (like how Magic Kingdom and Disneyland are designed).

I will note, the portals are designed so they are immersive, but you enter and exit through the front of the portal, instead of side entry and exit. I’m curious how that will feel on busy days - but we shall see.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - The Ministry of Magic

We are situated right in the center of this portal, and you can see - it’s very 1920s Parisian vibes, just like from the Fantastic Beasts movies (RIP to a great concept but a weird product).

The Cirque Arcanus will be a show, featuring live actors and puppeteering, to recreate a lot of the “fantastic beasts” we saw in those movies. I feel this is a good comparison to the France pavilion in Epcot, but with an older more worn in feel, and a lot more Easter eggs hidden about. Lots of stores will be open, food, and of course - the big reveal is yet to come of the Harry Potter and the Battle for the Ministry, the epic ride (the only ride) inside this land. This has a feel of a more detailed Diagon Alley (one ride but the vibes and detail are what carry the land).

Dark Universe

HERE IS WHERE I AM HYPED BECAUSE OH MY GOODNESS SAKES YALLL

This looks like the front of the Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, the highly anticipated dark ride with a scary vibe (and apparently new generation audio animatronics), and I’m so hyped. The dying trees! The fog! The stench of villainy and decay! It’s like someone combined Haunted Mansion with the mansion from Young Frankenstein (but in a non campy way) and I am so here for it.

I am anxiously awaiting when they release video of the Burning Blade Tavern, with a windmill atop the tavern that will catch fire throughout the day/night.

How to Train Your Dragon - The Isle of Berk

The second thing I’m hyped about is this. Maybe it’s because I’m somewhat Norwegian and this brings me back to the motherland, but this land looks incredible.

I know that Universal had a bad rep for awhile on having things available for the younger kids (and rightfully so - but they have stepped up their game with Suess Landing & DreamWorks Land), but I’m hoping those are the ships for Fyre Drill, and this is where we are going to battle others. Plus, there’s going to be flying dragon drones! You can see part of the coaster, and maybe some food from the Mead Hall in this shot.

This land will be jammed with a ton of attractions, shows, characters, and more - so I’m excited. Also, as you know, I still need to watch the movies (the live action one comes out this summer, so maybe I should wait?).

Also, we get meet and greets with characters and how adorable are our main characters Hiccup (the guy) and Toothless (the dragon)? ADORABLE!

I want to hug a dragon.

Super Nintendo World

I feel technically the least hyped for here (which is a shock but not a moment to downgrade this land) but I think it’s because I’m really hyped for those other two. We get a shot of Yoshi’s Adventure, which will be a slow moving attraction through the upper part of the park - so this will definitely be the little kid/person who doesn’t want fast rides attraction. I’ve heard some comparisons to the Tomorrowland Terrace People Mover in Magic Kingdom, from folks who have experienced it already - and I think that’s great, because not everything needs to be fast and overwhelming. You’re going to get some great views of the land though (Mine-Cart Madness is what I’m hyped for in this portal).

Other Epic news - they released sales for 1 day ticket visits, starting for visits in June 2025, which can be sold alone or packaged with other tickets. Ticket entry for Epic is still a 1 park only ticket, you can’t hop to another park with that ticket - it’s entrance to Epic and Epic alone. So, if you have a Park to Park ticket for anything in 2025 with Universal, it won’t get you into Epic - you must have a specific Epic Universe ticket for admission. They note this is due to wanting to keep things from overcrowding during the first year.

Universal Orlando does have Epic included in the app park map - so if you’re interested in checking out things from a more detailed (but digital drawing) manner - I highly suggest downloading the Universal Orlando app (make sure it’s ORLANDO and not HOLLYWOOD!). Their app has improved over the last several years, and it will also integrate with the new generation wands that are debuting with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - The Ministry of Magic.

It’s a beautiful sunny day and I’ve had an entire week of those this week, and after this past winter of perpetual ice and snow storms, I’m living for these spring like vibes

If you didn’t know, the most beautiful festival at Epcot is back again in 2025, from last week through the first week of June 2025 - and it’s a festival that even makes this avid non-gardener happy. The highlight for me, always are the fabulous topiaries that are scattered around Epcot, and here’s a quick behind the scenes on their history.

67 days until EPIC UNIVERSE OPENS!

That’s right - May 22 is getting even closer and closer, which means a brand new theme park is just about to open! I’ve been reading daily about reviews from cast member previews (no pics allowed yet), but the park is sounding absolutely incredible as they release more and more info, and that’s kind of the theme today.

Unofficial reports and video from fly overs show an incredible lightning package across the entire park - this place is going to be fantastic day or night, but I’m a sucker for nighttime theme park vibes and I really honestly can’t wait to experience it. Since I don’t really link to anything like that - I’m sure you can find pics and vid on social media, or simply just follow @bioreconstruct on Twitter (I refuse to call it anything else), for incredible theme park photos always.

If you didn’t know what lands are appearing here - we have:

  • get your spooky on, complete with what should be an iconic dark ride, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, it’s supposed to be pushing the edge of PG-13 to give you some real thrills.

I can’t wait for official photos to start getting released in the next month - but the art work vs the aerial photos I’ve seen? This place will actually live up to its name.

For me, I’ve been most interested in the Celestial Park and How To Train Your Dragon - The Isle of Berk, & Dark Universe as the three portals I want to visit most. I adore star themed things - How To Train Your Dragon is a movie property I know nothing about but it looks delightfully fun, and Dark Universe sounds like it’s going to be everything we want in a scary (but fun) theme park land.

Food reports are continuing to be released, and yes - Butterbeer is making an appearance, as Bìeraubeurre (the French spelling due to the 1920s Paris theming) in a brand new assortment of options - the crepes look delightful and ready to send you to sugar shock.

NEW WANDS ALERT

There are new wands debuting, with haptic interactions and lighting effects, ability to win points for your house (use the Universal Orlando app), cast your own Patronus (so it sounds like we might encounter some evil?), and more! All will happen with the second generation wands.

Some new magical spell locations will also pop up in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley as well. Check out all the details here!

while also doing some weekend travel payments, doing some quote requests for Royal Caribbean, checking various travel news things…I thought I would be more low key on this week’s submission, since the last month of them have been a couple hour ventures of writing and editing, and mama needs a break (and my nails are long and I’m learning how to type with longer pretty nails!)

News-y things are the vibe today, let’s chat.

getting your kid a passport is serious business

This was my goal for yesterday morning. Yes, I’m a travel advisor and my child didn’t have a passport. It’s actually a bit of a pain getting your kid a passport, because unless you need MORE paperwork hurdles (notarized statement from the other parent agreeing to let the kid get a passport because that parent isn’t present) - you need BOTH parents at the appointment, along with their photo ID and black and white copies of the ID, black and white photocopy of kid’s birth certificate and the OFFICIAL copy - plus finding a spot that isn’t in the middle of the day so no one is pulling kid out of school for an hour and all parents aren’t busy with life.

Things I learned yesterday to help you out:

• don’t do a walk in appointment. The State Department site will probably have the info wrong for the destination (our post office DOESN’T take walk ins and the contact phone number is wrong - which we didn’t realize). Make an online appointment.

• Make sure your application is the 2025 version. The current presidential administration has completely changed certain elements of the passport application and the option available to download on the US State Department site is inaccurate for everyone at this second. This meant I filled it out and printed it, then took it to the post office, and proceeded to have to hand write it on a new updated version that they keep in the back so they don’t run out.

• Use BLACK pen for that rewrite you’ll have to do, and DO NOT MAKE ANY ERRORS or you will have to be at the grace of a kind US Post Office employee that squeezed you in as a walk in, and they will have to get another form for you to fill out - which you will rewrite VERY SLOWLY because you’re afraid of making a mistake and forgetting your own name (I messed up my married/maiden name on the 2nd attempt, and my 1st attempt I messed up my husband’s birthdate).

• Have checks. You’ll pay $100 for passport book to the US State Department, and $35-50 to the local center (depending on if you need to get the photo there or you bring your own. Make sure that photo is within the dimensions required AND DON’T SMILE). This is the reason why you have a check book in 2025.

• Please be kind to the people doing their job, and allot some time in case you need to wait. Bring your own copies of everything, prepare that you won’t get them and the originals back for up to 4-8 weeks (processing time is super fast right now so go go go, since it’s probably going to be less than a month for new and renewals under two weeks)

It was about an hour because I’m apparently dumb, but typically should be 15-30 minutes if you have everything ready to go.

Mobile Passport Control is an excellent way to help streamline your return back into the USA, along with Global Entry if you’re a frequent traveler, and TSA PreCheck if you’re someone who does a lot of domestic flights.

You’ll get a card for Global Entry and it lasts for 5 years, but you just type that number into your flights when booking them. It has the same benefits as TSA PreCheck but a more intensive application process. TSA PreCheck does not have the level of in-depth background research, also lasts for five years, but best for those just doing a lot of domestic flights and not someone who flies overseas or out of the country ever.

Per this news article from last fall, 51% of Americans have a passport and it was the third year in a row for record highs in passport applications. If you want to do anything that involves FLYING out of the United States to a non-US destination, you MUST have a US Passport [this is geared towards US citizens but clearly anyone leaving their home country should have one].

US Passport Cards should really only be for folks that live on a border with Canada/Mexico, and they cross back and forth a lot - you’re the folks who this is for (or the same folks with the Enhanced Drivers Licenses - it’s a small portion of folks). Yes you can use it for cruises, but if you are flying to get to the ports, it won’t help you (can’t fly into Canada/Mexico/Bermuda with a passport card - you can only cruise to them). You can fly around the USA with a US Passport Card, if you don’t have a drivers license or just want to take something extra in case.

Cruises that stop and start in two different countries, cruises that aren’t round trip - all require passport books.

US State Department Passport Site - still the best place to start looking (even though I ran into problems, it’s okay - just check beforehand and you’ll be good).

You can pay to expedite your new or renewal passport application for extra cost.

And now you know what I did this last Saturday morning.

Why? Because I’m going on a New England/Canada cruise with my kid this summer!

I haven’t been back in that part of the country/continent in over 30 years, so it’s time to go and prattle around. Stay tuned for cruise content later this summer and how to keep an 11 year old entertained on a cruise ship geared more towards an older crowd (basketball and ice cream are my tips). Very excited to relive my Anne of Green Gables memories, as we are catching a well reviewed show in PEI, as well as sailing the St Lawrence Gulf & Seaway, and heading back to Quebec City and Montreal! I haven’t been in Quebec since I was a little younger than kiddo, and this time, I do actually know some conversational French, so we’re going to see if the three years of straight A’s in high school French were helpful or not. (I graduated in 2002 so we’ll see).

Other fun news

Put together my sorority group cruise for next July 2026 on the Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas this past week, and I apologize in advance to any non AMB who ends up squeezed inside our room block. I’ll try to keep them all in check.

I’m hyped to be on an Oasis class ship and be vibing for a fun easy Monday - Friday getaway.

I am truly hyped to get back to Perfect Day at CocoCay and have round 2 of our adult beach day party at Hideaway Beach (that I like to accidentally call Hideaway Bay so sorry pals).

Which is better, Perfect Day; Disney’s Castaway Cay; Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point; Carnival’s Half Moon Cay; Carnival’s Celebration Key?

All are great. Just depends on your type of fun and relaxation.

• more chill vibes right now at Half Moon (they are getting a big refurb to retheme the island into two portions, one for Carnival and one for Holland America) but that crystal clear blue water is a stunner with a massively long white sand beach-

• Castaway is more traditional protected cove beach and less massively built up, so you never deal with any seaweed ever in the big areas of it. Also, Disney characters.

• Lookout is more traditional open water crystal blue vibes with lots of Bahamian cultural focus. Also, Disney characters.

• Perfect Day is more focused on being BAM tons of options for all vibes (private beach clubs or open water areas or massive pool or protected lagoon plus extras)

• Celebration Key is going to be a mix of Perfect Day and Half Moon.

Weirdly and I don’t know why, Carnival/Holland America/Princess (all part of the Carnival Corporation) don’t have their drink packages work on their private islands. Royal Caribbean does. Disney does not do drink packages (but sodas are automatically included).

However, let’s take a moment to mourn the recent loss of the iconic pirate ship bar at Half Moon Cay, as it is no more (probably due to the remodel of the island, but still!)

There’s just one more left, and I’ll be honest, sometimes I forget this resort as it’s its own unique destination. I have a couple folks who love visiting here, but I should chat about it and stop hiding it from the general public who are unawares…

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground and Cabins

Did you know, that Fort Wilderness is NOT part of Disney’s Wilderness Lodge? A lot of folks get those two confused - and they are close to each other, but very different.

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort has multiple names, depending upon how you look it up - some refer to the campsites, and some to the cabins. But, this is historically the third resort that opened up at Walt Disney World, a month after the official opening of Magic Kingdom/Contemporary/Polynesian, back in November 1971.

Back then, it was literally just camping. Campsites, wilderness, even a railroad for several years! Plus, horses and horses and lots and lots of land (750 acres, which is almost double the size of Animal Kingdom, which is the largest theme park in the world - thanks to the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction). There even was a water park, known as River Country, for many years - but the primary focus was camping in tents, eventually pop ups and RVs got their own spots, and then the cabins arrived, for those who didn’t want to be so rustic in their vacationing.

Fort Wilderness is well known for having fervent fans - probably the most out of any resort at WDW, because their RV sites can book up quickly and stay booked for any major holiday. You can do longer stays here when camping, and you can see some incredible Halloween or Christmas decor at the RV sites, along with some spectacular RVs and golf carts too!

Now, if you’re planning to stay here, you have the options of the cabins (holds up to 6 guests, with a full kitchen and living room, a pull out bed in the living room, and a bedroom with queen bed + bunk beds, and one full bathroom), which are currently in the process of being updated from their more woodsy appearance to a modern woods vibe.

As you can see - it’s a BIG change from the older cabins to the newer ones!

For those who prefer to rough it - you can do tent camping, RV camping (with options for various lengths, and full hook up options for water/electricity/sewer), or pop up camping. All of these sites have a concrete/asphalt pad, with picnic table, charcoal grill, and can hold up to 10 people per site. There are multiple comfort stations around the resort, for showers/laundry/toilets.

But, what to do at this place, once you’ve set up for the long haul?

Friend, let me tell you - there’s a million things you can do, that don’t involve the parks. (or you can read and check out pricing here). Highlights include:

• Nightly campfire and singalong with Chip and Dale

• Archery

• Visit the Tri-Circle D Ranch, with pony rides, sleigh rides, and horse drawn carriage rides

• Wagon rides

• Fishing excursions and boat rentals from the marina

• Bike, canoe, kayak rentals and trails for bikes

• Segway tours around property

• plus swimming at the Meadow Pool and splash area (slide and hot tub at this main pool) or the quiet pool, playgrounds, basketball and volleyball court, or just take some pleasant walkabouts

The most iconic part of Fort Wilderness would have to be the famous Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, one of the longest running live shows of its kind, held 3 times each evening, at Pioneer Hall.

Lots of dancing, singing, and a fair bit of audience interaction, including a chorus of washboards as seen here. If you’re looking for a quiet meal, this is not your vibe.

Enjoy all you care to eat fixins, but particularly famous options are the fried chicken and strawberry shortcake. Enjoy a show, dine a bit, and then walk around after or just sit and rock in a rocking chair to work all the food through your tummy.

It can be a little awkward to get to Pioneer Hall, as you can’t get directly there with a private vehicle, you need to take the inner loop bus from the main check in building, ride on your golf cart (if you brought your own, make sure you have insurance or rent from WDW), grab a MinnieVan, or my personal favorite - take the boat from Magic Kingdom Dock to Fort Wilderness, and then the short walk over to Pioneer Hall.

Note that pricing will depend upon your location inside the restaurant, but gratuity is included with the cost, and so is alcohol. Disney Dining Plan folks - this is a 2 Table Service credit location.

You’ll also find quick service options, Trail’s End Restaurant has converted from buffet to quick service for all meals, but still some of the famous fried chicken and other vittles are still present. Grab drinks at Crockett’s Tavern while the kiddos spend your cash at the arcade, or grab some bites at the Chuck Wagon food truck.

Who are the people who will love this resort?

Folks who want a more relaxed experience, with less parks time, and more nature time. I won’t lie, it’s hard to rope drop from here, due to the way transportation works - but if you’re wanting to get away from it all, and have some theme parks scattered in there? This is the resort for you. I usually say if this is your 5th visit or more in coming to Walt Disney World, and you’re wanting to get away from it all and just be in nature, with some Disney touches - you are the folks who will love the resort.

which are my favorites?

Pop Century = value resort (2nd place is All Star Movies)

Gran Destino Tower at Coronado Springs = moderate resort (2nd place varies between PO French Quarter and Riverside)

Animal Kingdom Lodge = deluxe resort (and overall #1) (2nd place is probably split between Polynesian and Boardwalk)

Riviera Resort = deluxe villa option (but I need to stay at the Island Tower at the Polynesian now, because I was OBSESSED when I toured the place) (2nd place is probably Bay Lake Tower at this second)

My favorite visit is still the first time my son came to Walt Disney World - he was just turned 5 and in pre-K, and we did more resort than parks (because he loves hotels), and it was the most adorable thing in the world. We stayed at Pop Century - and Max adored everything about that place. (looking back at these pics, also let’s raise a toast to Bon Voyage Breakfast at Trattoria al Forno and hope it comes back some day).

Walt Disney World vacation packages for 2025 are bookable through check in dates of December 31, 2025 right now (2026 isn’t yet available, but I have a list of folks most interested already). For first timers, I recommend a Sunday - Saturday or Sunday - Friday visit, with 4-5 park days (sometimes park hopper, sometimes single park tickets), so you can get a nice taste of everything, with some time to chill and relax (a resort day is a great idea!).
New to 2025 packages, you get a free visit to a Disney water park on your arrival day (water parks open 10a-5pm, so I think that works best for those driving in or with early morning arrivals).

You can do: single park tickets, park hopper tickets, or add on the water parks and more option (water parks/mini golf/foot golf/regular golf at the 9 hole walking course).

Are you a golfer? There’s a WHOLE bunch of golfing options at WDW

You can add on Quick Service Dining or Disney Dining plan, to budget in some food costs (because you do have to eat), you can add on the Memory Maker PhotoPass (unlimited photos from rides and more, for your entire stay), travel insurance through Walt Disney Travel Company, and none of those additions will add to your deposit (unless you’re adding insurance at deposit - I typically recommend do that with your final payment).

Deluxe Resorts at Walt Disney World

You’ll find them grouped around Magic Kingdom, Epcot/Hollywood Studios, Disney Springs, and Animal Kingdom. Some of them are icons from the first moments of existence (Contemporary and Polynesian Village), others have become beloved over the years (Beach and Yacht Clubs, Boardwalk Inn), and one in particular is beloved and divisive (Animal Kingdom Lodge) depending upon your views of transportation.

Benefits of staying at a deluxe resort? Well, you do get more amenities, more upscale theming, more dining/shopping options, highly themed pools, typically multiple transportation options, Extra Magic Hours (after hours access to select parks on select nights per week), and the main reason why folks like them ==== they are the closest options to the theme parks. Folks like convenience.

All deluxe resorts have a deluxe villa option. It’s part of the whole DVC membership (if you really love Disney, you know what DVC is but I’m not going to go deep into that here) - with studios and 1-2-3 bedroom villas, plus some unique options. Anyone can go stay at them, so you don’t need to be a member, but they have amenities for longer stays (washer/dryer, full kitchen, multiple bedrooms). They are part of the home resort, but with their own unique theme inside the resort.

Three resorts are solely deluxe villas room types: Disney’s Riviera Resort, Disney’s Old Key West Resort, and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa. I’ll go into their details at the end.

Monorail Resorts - the resorts stuck deep in the heart of a Disney fan, and the gift that many want under the tree

• Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa (and the Villas at the Grand Floridian)

  • the flagship resort, with a Victorian feel - and the resort with an incredible amount of food offerings!

• Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort (and the Villas and Bungalows at the Polynesian)

  • venture to the South Pacific when you stay here - an opening day original resort (and if you’re deep in Disney/Beatles lore - you know that The Beatles officially ended here)

• Disney’s Contemporary Resort (and Bay Lake Tower)

  • iconic, mid-century, TALL are always my three words for here (and if you love Presidential history, you know that Richard Nixon’s famous “I’m not a crook” speech happened here, along with being an opening day resort)

The icons. These three are the ones that everyone wants to stay at when they think WDW, because all three have stops on the Disney Monorail, the most famous transportation system in Florida. Everyone else gets their own section but I’m putting these three together because everyone considers them together.

Numerous places to eat, drink, shop, and relax here - enough that if I wrote them all out, you’d be stuck in your seat even longer than usual. But some highlights:

• Trader Sam’s Enchanted Grog Grotto - the quirky tiki bar located deep in the heart of the Polynesian

• California Grill - expansive views of Magic Kingdom and surrounding areas, with delectable cuisine and service, from atop the Contemporary

• 1900 Park Fare - adorable character dining with Tiana, Mirabel, Cinderella, and Prince Ali, at the Grand Floridian

• the Volcano pool at the Polynesian, with watching fireworks from Magic Kingdom - while having a Dole Whip in hand? Hard to beat that feeling on a nightly basis

• Pool cabanas at the Grand Floridian Beach pool, with views of the Seven Seas Lagoon

• Fishing expeditions (or just boating around) from the marina at the Contemporary, across Bay Lake and more

Which one is my favorite? I love them all for different reasons, but I had a club level weekend at the Polynesian, during Christmas time, right before going on a Disney Cruise, and let me tell you — eating a Dole Whip in my room, while watching Magic Kingdom Christmas fireworks from my balcony…

— core memory right there. I think about this view and experience often 🥰

Monorail resorts all run on the Resort Line (runs counter-clockwise around the Seven Seas Lagoon), with stops at Transportation and Ticketing Center > Polynesian > Grand Floridian > Magic Kingdom > Contemporary > Transportation and Ticketing Center

Not working in your budget for the next vacation? Make sure to just pop in, have a dinner at one, and do a little wandering about. I love recommending Monorail crawls for folks looking for a fun dinner or drinks evening.

New addition — the Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort just opened in December. I did a walk about and man, I loved this location. The lagoon views, the fireworks views, the room theming and vibes - plus it’s actually a reasonable scootch from the Main Ceremonial House to the tower, about the same distance as staying in the Garden Wing or Bay Lake Tower or Grand Floridian Villas. They have their own quiet pool (with a Moana splash area), a walk up only bar and grill for all meals (Wailulu Bar & Grill), and a fitness center - the first one at the Poly ever!

Truly, it was an absolutely breathtaking spot and made me so happy to wander about.

Iconic room types on the Monorail include the Polynesian Over the Water Bungalows (with private plunge pool on the balcony), the 2 story theme park view 3 bedroom Grand Villas at Bay Lake Tower, the Tower Club rooms on the top floor of the Contemporary, and the 3 bedroom Grand Villas at Grand Floridian, that feature a massive master bathroom and media room.

But everyone wants to be in an over the water bungalow if they can swing it.

A simply perfect way to have all the friends have a friends weekend at Magic Kingdom

All monorail resorts have walking path + boat + Monorail to Magic Kingdom, Monorail to Epcot, and buses to the rest of the parks and Disney Springs.

• Disney’s Wilderness Lodge (with Copper Creek Villas and Cabins, and Boulder Ridge Villas)

Love nature, love feeling a little fancy, but also love theme parks? My friend, have you considered a stay at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge? Imagine a beautiful, tall, open lobby with woodwork and artifacts from the Pacific Northwest, that soars 60-70 feet into the air, and a burbling creek that starts in the lobby and finishes as a waterfall into the courtyard pool. There’s even a working geyser, and boat transportation to the Magic Kingdom, which is my favorite boat route at WDW.

Do you love Christmas? Imagine a 40-50 foot Christmas tree, and trimming, all about this lobby. It’s probably the best holiday vibes of any Disney Resort.

One of the cutest places to dine here is Storybook Dining at Artist Point, where you enjoy a prix fixe dinner with Snow White, Grumpy, Dopey, and the Evil Queen.

I had a friends weekend at a 2 bedroom villa in the Copper Creek area, and it was wonderful to have those courtyard views, extra bathroom and bed space (especially with a 6 month old in the group), and just vibing in nature.

Bonus cool room type? My favorite, the Copper Creek Cabins - with a private whirlpool with lake views and a fireplace. This is the cabin I want all to myself.

Epcot Resorts (boat resorts, as I call them)

• Disney’s Beach Club Resort (and Beach Club Villas)

• Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

• Disney’s Boardwalk Inn (and Boardwalk Villas)

Headed southeast-ish to the Epcot Resorts! You’ll find this trip all around the Crescent Lake, with walking paths to Epcot and Hollywood Studios, along with a delightful relaxing boat ride on the Friendship Boats. You can even walk over to the Disney Skyliner stop at the Epcot International Gateway, if you’d like to fly to Hollywood Studios instead. Buses to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom for all three resorts.

Beach and Yacht Club are two halves of the same whole resort - with Beach having blue theming / more family seashore vibes, while Yacht is more cream and grey - with more New England boating vibes. Both have access to the main Stormalong Bay pool (currently under a refurb through early summer 2025), which is always a big winner for families who adore pool days. Lazy river, long pirate slide, sandbottom pools and sandbars - I personally think it’s a great pool for the tweens and teens, when they are great independent swimmers, since there are multiple areas to watch if you have little ones.

Boardwalk Inn is actually my favorite of the three to stay at when picking this area. I love the feel of the Boardwalk, a delightful main pool slide (and I enjoyed the quiet pools too), and retro beach resort vibes in every room. There’s a super unique room option here for guests who want their own perfect getaway - the Garden Cottages!

Designed for two guests, with a 2 floor design (upstairs king bed and soaking tub; downstairs bathroom with kitchenette and living room area), they are truly adorable and a perfect honeymooner vibe. They are also concierge/club level rooms, so you’ll enjoy those extra amenities as well.

If you’re lucky, you might run into a cute friend at the resort when you’re boppin’ around the place. The details at this resort are delightful - and I always like to think that this painting is an ode to the creation of the Miss America Pageant at the Atlantic City Boardwalk, back in the 1920s (and that’s what Boardwalk Inn is themed to!). Overall, it’s just a fun resort, and I love it for more adult focused visits.

Animal Kingdom vibes 24/7

• Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (and Jambo House - Kidani Village)

LOOK HERE FOLKS. Disney is great at so many things. But creating a resort that feels like you’re on another continent? That is the true talent of Disney Imagineering.

Animal Kingdom Lodge will do that for you. Watch giraffes and zebras and other pals from your balcony, if you do a savanna view room. Smile at the guests bouncing around the pool from a pool view view. Look at the landscape all around if it’s a standard view room. Everything works, and everything is a delight. Enjoy the vast details of the main Jambo House lobby, eat everything in sight when you pull up to the Boma buffet (and make sure to get that Boma mustard), or just find a quiet spot and watch the animals from a multitude of viewing options. All are great. Need fancier pants dining? Jiko, go to Jiko and get your mind blown. Love wines? The largest amount of South African wines in a wine list not in the country of South Africa is split between Jiko and Sanaa (found over at Kidani Village). Get the bread service at Sanaa (or at their lounge, or get it to go, and thank me later).

Kidani Village is the other half of this resort - guests staying here will have Deluxe Studio Options, 1-2-3 bedroom villas, and the 3 Bedroom Grand Villa is a fun 2 story vibe with floor to ceiling TALL windows. There’s a nice little shuttle bus that runs between both halves continuously, and buses stop at KV first, then Jambo House second. Sanaa will have quick service options to grab and go in the morning, but the lounge and regular dinner options in the evening - highlights are getting a table next to the window and seeing the birds come right up to you. Ideally - grab a dinner reservation when it’s going to be not super dark, so you can see out of the windows, if that’s your main focus (the big animals can’t get within 30-40 feet of the buildings but the little ground birds will).

what do we want? we want savanna view rooms to get these vibes, yall.

I can go on and on and on, but I love this resort so much. It was the first one to ever stun me with its beauty and I’ve stayed there more than any other Disney resort. I adore this spot.

Bus routes to all destinations from here - which makes some folks grump and say it’s too far away from anything, and then I say, “ have you considered a map.” HAVE YOU? (because it’s closer to Epcot/HS than the monorail resorts are to those parks).
anyways, I defend this resort hard because I love it more than the others.

and our final three, all deluxe villas resorts:

• Disney’s Riviera Resort

• Disney’s Old Key West Resort

• Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa

These three are unique because of their design - they’re intended more for folks who are regular WDW travelers, folks who stay longer, and have a more relaxed feel to them.

Disney’s Riviera Resort

I adore this resort. I like being here with friends, because we will get a big room (love the 1 bedroom villas here) and we can have a ton of folks just pop in and out - in fact, we grabbed a couple of them and did that for the WDW 50th anniversary and it was so delightful. Food options are great, the pools are relaxing, the pool bar is a true gem, coffee shop is tasty, and I get a stop on the Skyliner. Compact, but never feels squished. This is actually my #2 resort after Animal Kingdom Lodge - and it’s a resort I make the effort to visit, even if I’m not staying there.

Topolino’s Terrace = wonderful character meal breakfast & upscale fine dining dinner - Primo Piatto = delightful quick service (especially lunch!)

Buses to Magic Kingdom/Animal Kingdom, skyliner to Epcot and Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Old Key West Resort

The original deluxe villas resort, opened back in December 1991 as Disney’s Vacation Club Resort - was a true change from the standard hotel designs that were found at Walt Disney World. Instead of hotel rooms, you found bedrooms! With kitchens! And living rooms! And you could have more folks be in the room, and feel comfortable staying for longer lengths of time! Themed after the laid back vibes of our most continental southern island (an island I love dearly), you’ll find the largest rooms on property with deluxe studios and 1-2-3 bedroom villas. Unique to these deluxe studios, they are both regular queen beds instead of queen bed + queen Murphy bed.

Main pool has a fun sandcastle slide and has a sauna as well! Regulars know that Olivia’s Cafe for breakfast is a hidden gem here, but I love the Gurgling Suitcase bar for a very Key West vibe.

Not really a lot of elevators in this resort, and with everything being 2-3 stories, if mobility is an issue, I typically don’t want to put you here.

This resort is spaced around the Lake Buena Vista golf course (which also goes near parts of Saratoga Springs and Port Orleans - Riverside), as well as boat access to Disney Springs, and buses to all parks. Since this resort is VERY spaced out, there’s an internal bus loop + a main bus stop here. I typically recommend allowing extra time to for buses here due to this.

Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa

Do you love horses? If you’re a fan of racing, you’ll like the subtle thoroughbred vibes that are scattered around this resort. Another big one, but you’ll find that folks love it here due to the closeness to Disney Springs, as it’s actually a walkable distance (or you can just take the boat over).

Unusually - while there is a spa in the name, since the Covid re-opening in summer 2020, this spa hasn’t been in service since - so ignore that. (spa services still available at Senses Spa at the Grand Floridian though! Book through here)

It’s a lovely resort, and just like with Old Key West - if you’re needing a lot of space, this is a great and lower priced way to get those 1-2 bedroom villas. But, keep in mind that it’s a bus loop resort, and you’ll need to allot for a longer transport time. Most of the folks who are here, they’re more for the relaxation vibes vs the go go go vibes. Main pool with multiple small pools scattered around, some dining and quick service and lounge options - but if you’re wanting big foods, just head to Disney Springs, you’re just so close!

Unique to this resort, are the Treehouse Villas - a bit rustic but you’ll feel like you’re camping in the air in these elevated villas that hold up to 9 guests, with a full kitchen and living room, washer/dryer, and 2 queen Beds and 1 queen-Size sleeper sofa and 1 bunk bed and 1 twin-size sleeper chair (I always call that the trouble chair 🤪) These are NOT mobility friendly as you do have to go up a big set of stairs for all of them, and they are the farthest away from the main building, so allow for that in your plans. Great for a big friends getaway!

As of this writing, I have stayed at every single deluxe resort listed here, except for OKW and Saratoga - plus I’ve stayed in Bay Lake Tower, Copper Creek Villas, Beach Club Villas - and toured every option listed. Call me a completist, but I’m trying my best (it’s for SCIENCE! and because there’s no point in doing this if it’s not to give my travelers educated guidance on best options for them).

There’s one resort left, but I’m saving that for it’s own post, since it’s a bit of an outlier and most people forget it exists. Wait until next time for our mystery friend!

But today, today we are talking a definition not found in the Merriam-Webster, today we are talking the MODERATE resort class at the Walt Disney World Resort!

Last week I blathered on about Disney’s Port Orleans - Riverside, because I was staying there, but there are a total of four resorts in this class (some folks do put the Fort Wilderness Cabins and Campgrounds in here - but I’m reserving them for their own post). But today, we get Disney’s Port Orleans - French Quarter, Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, and Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. (and maybe a couple things about Riverside as well).

Disney’s Port Orleans - French Quarter

I will always have a special place in my heart for POFQ (as I typically write it), because it was the first Disney resort I ever stayed at and it brought me a lot of happiness.

One of the physically smallest resorts at WDW (I feel here and Riviera are tied for footprint), it has a lot of character and charm from the moment you walk into the lobby. Themed to feel like a family friendly version of the French Quarter (no Bourbon Street shenanigans here), you’ll find a charming Dragon Pool in the center courtyard, cobblestone streets, dancing gators, brightly colored buildings, and of course - beignets, those delightful Cajun concoctions, with a Mickey touch.

• All rooms here are rated for up to 4 guests, with 2 queen beds, and an actual 1 king bed category you can book. Room locations vary depending on view (resort - which can be anywhere, garden - focused on greenery, river - most eastern location with views of the Sassagoula River, pool - most central with courtyard pool views, preferred - closest to lobby). Full bathroom with tub/shower/toilet, separate double sink with curtain for changing area, coffeemaker and drink cooler. Rooms had a refurb several years ago, and are again on a soft goods refurb right now, but they are charming and cute. Just like value resorts - all moderates will have room doors open to the outside (only one exception, coming up later).

• Unlike the other Moderates - POFQ doesn’t have a table service dining location. Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory is quick service only for all meals and grab and go; Scat Cat’s Club has coffee bites and beignet options in its cafe but live music on the weekends in its lounge, with themed drinks. Mardi Grogs is the pool bar with quick bites and drinks of all kinds.

• Recreation is a delight with a very cute pool but even cuter kid’s splash and slide area, and a hot tub a little further away from the main pool. Movies Under the Stars, daily recreational activities, jogging paths, and guests here can also use the pools over at Riverside (and vice versa) as they are sister resorts. Expect an 8-12 minute walk depending on room location, to the main pool at Riverside.

• Buses to all parks, with boats that run to Disney Springs and to Port Orleans - Riverside. If you’re planning to go to Disney Springs, note that buses also will run to here as well, since the boats will stop earlier than the bus routes. Boats sometimes can get filled up so make sure to allow a little extra time for a slower, more relaxing ride.

Disney’s Port Orleans - Riverside Resort

This one has been talked about a bunch! But I’ll just mention that it has two main themes, the Alligator Bayou (with rooms that can hold up to 5 guests, with 2 queen beds + 1 child size pull down bed), and the Magnolia Bend (all rooms here hold up to 4 guests). This resort is more Louisiana low country vibes vs New Orleans theming.

• Dining here includes Riverside Mill Food Court for all meals and grab and go items, Boatwright’s Dining Hall for dinner, and nightcaps with live music on the weekend at the River Roost lounge. Grab pool drinks and more at Muddy Rivers pool bar, overlooking the main pool.

• Pools? We got’em here! Unlike only one at POFQ, there’s a main pool here, Ol’ Man River, plus multiple smaller quiet pools all around the resort. Nice fast pool slide, water play features and a hot tub all here.

• Just like POFQ, buses and boats for transportation. Note that it’s a physically larger resort, so it will have a bus route with multiple stops throughout the resort for pickups, with one main bus stop at the main lobby that will be the last stop.

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

If you’ve been here prior to 2019, you’d be shocked to see a resort that had a MASSIVE overhaul thanks to the addition of the Gran Destino Tower. This 15 story tower is the new centerpiece and main lobby for the entire resort, with the only club level rooms at any moderate resort (Chronos Club, highly rated, with gorgeous views of the entire WDW property, on the top floor), along with the Toledo (tapas style restaurant) and the Dahlia Lounge - all on the top floor.

Spanish architecture influences, with the Gran Destino Tower having a lot of Barcelona vibes from Walt Disney’s visits there in the 1930s. Gorgeous lobby with a great morning coffee shop, and indoor walking to more dining and shopping areas.

I’ve stayed here 4 times, and all in the tower. I love that tower so much!

If you’re not staying in the tower, you have preferred rooms (Casitas theme), and then water/standard view rooms in the Ranchos or Cabanas areas. They all surround the Villa de Lago lake, with the Three Bridges Bar & Grill in the center, and the The Lost City of Cibola main pool (great big long fast slide and a huge hot tub), plus pool bar and recreation area all in the center.

Buses are transportation to all destinations from here, with a loop that starts at Casitas, and finishes at the tower, before heading out. You’re equidistant from Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios when staying here.

This is a great spot for wanting extra amenities without paying deluxe resort rates - since you’ll get one main pool, several smaller pools, a fitness center, tons of dining options (El Mercado de Coronado is the main food court area for all meals, with Toledo, Maya Grill, Rix Sports Bar & Grill, and Three Bridges Bar & Grill as table service options- along with Cafe Rix, Barcelona Lounge, Dahlia Lounge, Siestas Cantina pool bar and grill, and Laguna Bar as more options). There’s more since this resort has a big conference center for events, but you’ll find tons of room options, and a relaxing and peaceful vibe. It’s a great choice for an adults only vacation to Disney.

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

The other Moderate resort that’s gotten a big refurb in the last ten years, is CBR. Thanks to the addition of the central hub for the Disney Skyliner being smack in the middle of the resort, you’ll find a lot of folks who love Skyliner access, wanting to stay here.

Just like at Coronado and Riverside, this resort is divided up into villages - Aruba and Jamaica are the closest options to the Skyliner (Aruba for the Riviera/Epcot line, Jamaica for the main hub), with Martinique being the preferred room location option since they are next to the main food and recreation amenities. Trinidad North/South were the old Pirate themed rooms, but they’ve all been upgraded to an “Under the Sea” vibe. You can’t book those types directly - just luck of the draw if you’re over there with a standard/water view/pool view room. Walking paths connect all villages to the Skyliner and to the Old Port Royale center, with bus stops at all villages.

Every village has their own quiet pool in the center, with Trinidad rooms having the Spyglass Grill at their pool, with quick service items for breakfast/lunch/dinner as well. In Old Port Royale, you’ll find the main themed pool, Fuentes de Morro; along with Sebastian’s Bistro (pre-fixe Caribbean dining), Banana Cabana beach bar, and Centertown Market quick service for all meals and grab and go, and as always - there’s always shopping. A fun addition to CBR is a cute island, Caribbean Cay, with a playground hidden in the maze of walking paths, as you walk from Aruba to Old Port Royale.

Last but not least — we HAVE to mention the Disney Skyliner. The newest form of transportation at WDW - it opened up in late September 2019, and adds another unique form of transport to the vaunted Disney Transportation system.

Centrally located at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort - you’ll find three lines that connect here.

• Art of Animation & Pop Century - direct line to the shared station for these resorts. Fly over Hourglass Lake, and land at the Generation Gap bridge for this station.

• Epcot / Riviera - sail over to Riviera Resort, and if you’re not getting off at that resort, just stay on and head behind the America and France World Showcase Pavilions for a unique view into Epcot, and land at the International Gateway entrance.

• Hollywood Studios - fly a direct route to Hollywood Studios, with landing right at the entrance to the park.

It’s always free to ride, and runs typically 45-60 minutes prior to park opening, and up to 90 minutes after park closing (hours of operation are always posted at the stations.

The main station also features multiple bathrooms, and a Joffrey’s Coffee Shop just off to the side. Bathrooms also are found at the Hollywood Studios station.

Wheelchairs, ECVs, and strollers welcome and do not need to transfer - they can scoot you on, or if you need more time, you’ll hop on a stationary gondola and be slotted into the line. Narration of various scenery follows with air flow from the voyage, with benches inside - up to 10 guests at a time inside.

I love riding the Skyliner every chance I get - it’s just very delightful and peaceful. If you’re afraid of heights, I do not recommend staying at a resort that uses the Skyliner, as you will need to use it to get to Epcot or Hollywood Studios.

Weeeee - that was fun - slightly a day behind, but I’ve been pretty busy with a lot of vacation requests since returning home last week. Always a good busy, but sometimes it makes sitting down to write this go to the back of the list! DCL cruises and Holland America Line cruises have been the big big requests recently.

Disney Cruise Line just released their summer 2026 itineraries, and Royal Caribbean is in the same process as well. Universal Orlando Resort is still offering some great deals for last minute travel through end of April - and Epic Universe opens end of May!

Y’all, it’s been a long week since last Saturday.

I sit here on my couch, snuggling with my puppy dog, thinking about everything over the last 8 days and I’m truly impressed that I’m not more tired than I already am. I had a lot of plans to be chill and relaxed and I was for half the time, but I went hard early and then had some crazy flight delays at the end, so it was a mix of both.

I had plans to chat about Moderate Resorts this week - but also chat about everything from last week…so we will chat about one Moderate Resort during this and get the rest next week. I ended up doing enough things that this trip really does deserve its own focused post!

So, let’s recap!

Saturday

I flew down to Walt Disney World, my younger sister joined me for 2 nights, and we explored Disney Springs (she’s never been), and our resort of the week, Disney’s Port Orleans - Riverside Resort. A delightful Moderate resort, with the benefits of sharing some amenities with its sister resort, Port Orleans - French Quarter (lots of sister things this week), so you can enjoy a short walk or boat ride between the both of them, and their pools and more.

We stayed in a Royal Guest Room, which is quite elaborate in its theming - they are currently in process of being refurbished with improved USB outlets and more for the next year, ours was not a refurbished room. This room holds up to 4 guests, with a full bathroom and a curtain to make a changing area as well. I love the unique royalty theming, with the magical headboards, it really does make you feel like you’re at a Disney resort and truly a delight.

Disney Springs was great as always, Rachel had never been there so we did the full on wandering about. Grabbed dinner at The Polite Pig - and while I’m a bit of a NC BBQ snob, I was happily stuffed at the end. Popped into Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar so we could find some more Indiana Jones Easter eggs, as well as a tasty beverage.

Sunday

Most of the time, I tell folks to try to do 4-7 things per day, because you’re going to average 8-15k steps, and that’s a lot of overstimulation and activity for most folks, especially if you have littles.

I am not that person, and it’s a personal affront if I can’t hit at least 10 miles / 20k steps. With that being in mind, we accomplished THIRTY TWO SEPARATE THINGS from 7:30am to 11:00pm in three parks (Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Magic Kingdom), plus visited 2 extra resorts (Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Riviera Resort), and went on 2 different bus routes, 2 different monorail routes, and 2 different Skyliner routes. Plus food stops!

We were over 13.00 miles by the end of the day, and 29,000+ steps. This was a personal record for a park day that didn’t include a runDisney event, and it took me two days to recover because apparently after you turn 40 you get tired 🤪

What did we do? I actually timestamped and wrote down everything as we did them, for future record. We did utilize Early Entry for WDW resort guests, Lightning Lane Single Pass (LLSP) and MultiPass (LLMP), and actually took some rest breaks, believe it or not. Magic Kingdom closed at 11pm for all guests, so we didn’t use any Extra Magic Hours (which we wouldn’t have been able to use since we weren’t staying at a Deluxe).

A lot of this was focused on everything new since fall 2018, since my sister hadn’t been here since June 2018, so we wanted to clear all the new items for her in the space of two days.

The key is always,
be at the parks early, if you want to maximize your day.

Wake up 620am —Got to bus 7:20am —In line for Hollywood Studios —7:47am —Entered 8:00am
Ideally I would have liked to have been at the bus stop at 7am, but life happens.

Chose to go for Toy Story Land first

• Got in line for Slinky Dog Dash at 8:10 — ride opened early for Slinky 8:20 — got in line for Toy Story Mania at 8:33 - Bathroom break and ordered breakfast on Mobile Order for Woody’s Lunch Box (which opens at 9a but was taking orders prior) —Alien Swirling Saucers 8:50 —9a mobile order pickup Woodys lunch box.

• Sat and ate with Toy Story Land cleared before park official opening - which was the big helper for this entire thing, and got a nice rest break. Also smart since we didn’t eat before the park opened so we were definitely hungry by this point.

Star War’s Galaxy’s Edge

• Walk to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge from Toy Story Land entrance and took videos of Rachel’s reactions to the park —Milk Stand stop to introduce her to the joys of Blue Milk — walked to the Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run to get her reaction to the ship and took pics.

• Rode Standby line for Falcon 9:25, and got Rachel into the right hand pilot’s seat - which means she gets to pull the lever to send us into hyperspace! I always sit back right engineer as it’s my favorite spot.

  • Bathroom break (we were doing our best to be VERY hydrated this day, so you’ll see a lot of these)

• Walking out of the land and met Mandalorian 10:05-1010 - he meets in a group and hand selects folks to personally greet, and Rachel was one! She adores Mando and this was truly her highlight of the day, and I was so happy to take pics of it for her.

• First LLMP of the day for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway 10:19-10:37am (total time spent at attraction, since it has several parts). I adore this attraction and it brings me a lot of joy so it’s always a must do. I had debated between getting a LL for this or Slinky, but I think I made the correct decision in rope dropping Slinky first and going for this later, as we got a great rest break for an hour while still doing things.

• Needed a rest break, and went to see the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at 10:45am. Still a great show, and we walked in right before it started and got seats down low. A crowd pleaser and very prompt at 30 minutes.

• Muppet Vision 3D 11:30am. Rachel never has done this, and it closes officially in June, so this was probably my last hurrah in catching it, and I made sure to get more photos and such. It grew on me in the last ten years of visiting the parks, and I’ll be sad to see it leave, it’s an icon of the Muppets lore.

  • Pizzerizzo 11:50, ate here for the first of two times this week, great air conditioning and I love the kids meal as a good quick bite.

  • Bathroom - somehow I never realized the bathroom opens to the outside? But Gonzo’s Royal Flush was flushed and we head back into Galaxy’s Edge

Galaxy’s Edge PART TWO

• LLSP Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance - 1220 start-1248, folks forget that this is actually a long attraction, as it’s an experience with multiple events plus a ride. Rachel was very pleased and we got front row at the end, which is always perfect. No pics, just wanted to enjoy it with her. If you plan to do this, honestly a purchase is better than rope dropping, as Rise has the tendency to be snarky to all of us and sometimes not start up in the morning like it should. There has been a single rider option tested, but it does skip a LOT of the preshow and for a new guest, the whole preshow is actually worth the experience.

• LLMP Twilight Zone Tower of Terror - 1:08 start (used the 5 minute window as our LL was actually a 1:10pm start), you have to be careful with Tower, since it’s about 10 minutes to walk from here to Toy Story Land OR Galaxy’s Edge, so it’s a big walk across the park.

  • after this - we were done with all the big things we wanted to do here at Hollywood Studios. 10 rides/attractions/meet and greets from 7:47am - 1:18pm plus two meals and 1 snack, and bathroom breaks. That’s a huge day for anyone but we were just getting started!

Headed out of Hollywood Studios to Explore

Walk to Skyliner 1:20 —-Skyliner to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort — switch lines to the Epcot line - and stopped in to explore Disney’s Riviera Resort for a bit. I always love Riviera, the 1 bedroom villas are my favorite room type at WDW, and this place just gives me a lot of joy with the food selection, easy mobility around the resort, and beautiful views of Epcot and Caribbean Beach and the lake.

Hopped back onto the Skyliner and headed to Epcot, scanned in at 2:18pm

• Ran into the Evil Queen at the International Gateway entrance 2:20pm and got to be first to meet and greet with her! Astounding experience, I’ve never met her and she was perfect.

• Met Pooh at England/UK 223-231 and got a zillion photos with our silly ol bear.

• Headed back over and across to Japan to catch a specific festival drink, wandered through the Mitsukoshi store and then hit the Bitjutsu-kan Gallery, which was pretty cool to see how kawaii culture permeates through Japan. Rachel was stationed in Okinawa for three months when she was in the Air Force, and adored her time in Japan.

• Stopped in at the American Pavilion and watched the American Adventure at 330p, and again, turned it into a bit more of a nap (but I’ve now seen 50% of it instead of none of it). Not my favorite show at WDW, but a great rest stop.

• Kept walking through the path in the World Showcase, caught the fireworks boats floating into the park, and then stopped into Norway at Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe for some lefse and a frozen Viking Coffee (with liqueur) to perk us up.

• Kept walking through the rest of the park and headed to the Monorail, because I had managed to grab a LLMP for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure! Didn’t expect that so we had a big bonus. We are headed back to Epcot the next day so no need for rides here. Hopped onto the Monorail at 4:51pm and hustled our booties to Magic Kingdom via the Epcot line, then switched to the Express Monorail to Magic Kingdom.

  • Four things completed at Epcot, plus food and some resort exploration. A good rest break indeed.

Entering Magic Kingdom

• Scan into MK 5:15pm and the real fun starts now as I had been picking our 4th 5th 6th attractions to be later in the day so we had exploration and rest time. I knew that Magic Kingdom would be open late so we were ready to hit everything.

• LLMP Tiana’s Bayou Adventure 5:28-5:50, hustled here from the entrance and enjoyed the absolute happiness that exudes from this ride. Truly a wonderful improvement on the previous attraction.

• LLMP Pirates of the Caribbean 6:10, I hate the standby queue of this ride so much, enough that I will only do it if the wait time is 10 minutes or less, or I get a Lightning Lane. Grabbed a great ride photo!

• Stopped into Aloha Isle to get a refreshing Dole Whip 6:30, and finished it inside the Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room at 6:35pm. Rachel had never seen the show, so we had to introduce her to some iconic Disney history.

  • Bathroom break at Columbia Harbor House

• LLMP for Haunted Mansion at 7:05, love a good mansion trip and Rachel hadn’t seen the new addition of the Hatbox Ghost.

• LLSP TRON Lightcycle PowerRun 7:40 - I ADORE THIS RIDE SO MUCH and it brings me such happiness. A little bit of a sprint through Fantasyland to get over there, as cutting through the Castle Hub would have been a poor idea with fireworks about to begin.

• Happily Ever After fireworks 8:00, missed the first couple minutes as we hopped off TRON but caught my favorite park, which is the “Go the Distance” section before the finale and so my day was made, and saw Tinkerbell fly. Always makes me cry!

• Walked into Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at 8:20p and I scored over 400,000 so I call it a good ride, as I’m not amazing at this attraction’s game play.

• Walked over to Dumbo the Flying Elephant at 8:40 and soared about, it’s so beautiful at nighttime!

• Hopped on to The Barnstormer at 8:55, this attraction is 59 seconds long, if you’ve ever wondered how short it is.

• Checked out all of the Smellophants on Parade path in Storybook Circus, which was actually kind of fun to figure out the smells vs the elephants. You do need to have your face aimed at the smell to get the idea.

  • Bathroom Storybook Circus 9:10

• LL Under the Sea - The Journey of The Little Mermaid 9:18pm, a must do as we both love Ariel!

  • Wandered around and took pics for a bit, just needed some rest with a couple hours left in the day

• Snagged our very own boat at “it’s a small world” at 9:34 (also stopped trying for new LL here as we had done all the scheduled ones we wanted to do and just wanted to slow down our speed)

• Prince Charming Carrousel at 9:54pm, always a bit of a slow loader but we got in and out rather quickly

• The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh at 10:04 - my favorite Fantasyland attraction!

• Posted wait time for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train was 35 minutes, hopped into the standby queue at 10:18 (10:32 ride), which was fantastic. What left to do in 30 minutes?

• Popped onto Mad Tea Party at 10:41

• Last LLMP of the night with Space Mountain 10:50-10:55, could have actually gotten onto it one more time before the line closed but we decided not to do so

• Cinderella Castle mosiac walk through and pics and slow walk out 11:05

• Bus to our resort with a 12:00am arrival (unfortunately had bad bus luck at the end of the night

  • total amount done in Magic Kingdom? 18 (plus food and bathroom breaks)

  • total amount of things completed today? THIRTY TWO (not counting food!)

Monday - a more recovery day

Monday was waking up a little later, heading over to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Rachel doing Mission: Space Orange, and us both doing Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, while also painting a little, seeing the pretty sights of the festival, and then heading back to the resort for her to pack up and head back home.

Gave lots of hugs to Rachel and sent her back home, and then rested for awhile at the resort until it was time for the real reason why I was down here this week.

Magical Moments Vacations Top Producers Event 2025!

Yup, for the fourth year in a row, I was invited (scheduling prevented me from making it last year), so it’s always nice to get a fun reward from your agency for all the hard work that goes into each year of travel.

We had a private dessert party for the Epcot’s Luminous - A Symphony of Us fireworks on Monday; training in best practices and more with staff from Disney Destinations and our most elite agents on Tuesday, and a congratulations private dinner at California Grill, with fireworks views of Happily Ever After from atop Disney’s Contemporary Resort on Wednesday. It’s always nice to see fellow members of MMV, and after being here since 2018, seeing those who have grown up in the agency with you makes it feel a bit more like family.

All in all - it was a whirlwind week, with more focus on slowing down in the parks Monday - Thursday, and enjoying the resorts and exploring, when I wasn’t learning and expanding my knowledge base with my fellow advisors.

I’m always grateful to get this chance, and thankful for those who continue to let me be part of their vacation plans, and the referrals to their friends and family members.

Other highlights for the week? I toured the new Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, grabbed another meal at The Boathouse at Disney Springs (phenomenal as always), rode Dinosaur SIX TIMES IN A ROW, splashed around in the pool at my resort, and tried to get some restful sleep.

Definitely fell in love with Riverside during this visit - while I’ve booked it a bunch, this was the first time I’ve gotten to stay there, so I’m happy that I’ve checked it off the list. The walks around the resort, the quietly peaceful but elegant architecture, lots of pool and a very fast main slide, extra activities to do like horse-drawn carriage rides and fishing, make this a great place to rest when you’re not in the parks. Lots of flower gardens all about, and tons of bird watching here!

You’ll find boat access to Disney Springs, and bus access to all parks, with Epcot being the closest park to you. If you prefer to use ride share, you can do drop off/pick ups at the main lobby or near your building village.

I’m also excited to see what the new changes to the Royal Guest rooms will be, after they finish their refurbishment. It’s a lovely relaxing resort, and if you’re someone who loves visiting Disney Springs, it’s a perfect place to stay.

I’m sure you were all happy to read just a short info post last week, but the most important thing is knowing that REAL ID is actually happening, and I have the feeling I will be reminding folks of this for several years - so I’m sure it will come up again in future writings.

NOW! The very thing that everyone knows me for is Walt Disney World. It is sometimes a little frustrating, since I do more than WDW, but that’s another story for another day 🤪

First things first: The Walt Disney World Resort is “The Most Magical Place on Earth.”
The Disneyland Resort is “The Happiest Place on Earth” - in the words of Salute Your Shorts, get it right or pay the price

that being said, onto the World!

My favorite part of the World? No, not the parks, THE RESORTS. I used to be such a parks person, go hard go hard, and crash in the room - but I’ve grown to realize that it’s vacation, and you should enjoy the place where your head rests.

SO! Let’s chat about the various Walt Disney World Resorts, types - themes - benefits - and so on. Grab a comfy spot, this will be a LONG one folks.
Fun fact, probably 98% of this will be entirely out of my head without research, because if there’s one thing I know, it’s Disney Resorts.

The impetus for this post is because when you’re reading this (on the day it posts) I will be at Walt Disney World! Follow me on my social media links as I bounce around the resorts and parks why dontcha

Did that lady in the photos know she would be doing things like this for a living at that moment? Nope - I was just more stunned and in awe of everything around me.

hi! after finishing the Value section, I realized - this is a lot for one email. So I’m going to do this in three posts - Value / Moderate / Deluxe - but they are all going to come out on the same day. But, I’ll stagger them, so you can read the one you’re most interested in, or read them all - whatever floats your boat.

How many resorts are at THE Walt Disney World Resort?

WDW has five main resort categories: Value, Moderate, Deluxe, Deluxe Villa, and Campgrounds - for a total of 34 separate options for booking by their calculations. I tend to perceive the Deluxe and Deluxe Villa options as one entity but it all works out.

You’ll note that the differences between resort categories are always more inclusions for the guests staying there as you move up the list. Upgraded rooms, more purposeful theming, dining and bar and shopping options, more transportation variations, etc. All are lovely, I’ve stayed in 18 separate options as of this upcoming weekend, but I’ve visited all of them (first ever on my list to visit & stay was Port Orleans - French Quarter, and the very last to visit was Port Orleans - Riverside, so I thought was a nice full circle moment).

Anyone can visit a resort, but to park there, you need to be a registered guest OR have a dining reservation. Otherwise, WDW would prefer if you took Disney transportation to and from the resort. You’ll need to go through the security entrance gate every time you come in by bus or personal vehicle.

You can shop, enjoy the recreation amenities, dine, explore - but only guests registered to stay at that specific resort can use the pools (and several resorts will check for room keys/guest registration and provide wrist bands for this very reason, to prevent overcrowding of the pools).

All resort rooms will always have:

• 1-2 beds (or more, depending on resort/category), with at least 1 full bathroom. USB ports, HDTV (you can cast to it) with a lot of channels, towels and lines, drink cooler (if you want a full fridge, you need a villa, mini fridge - kitchenette or deluxe studio), and coffee maker (varies in type but Keurig-ish style with Joffery’s Coffee pods) and tea. There are pay laundry areas at all resorts (villas have a washer and dryer inside). Expect all beds to be queens (occasional kings) except for some specific variations noted below.

• Check in usually is 3-4pm, with check out standard at 11am. It’s kind of hard to do a late check out request here, so if that’s something you always expect from normal hotels, it’s not going to happen here.

• Guest Services, Bell Services (stores and moves your luggage upon request), quick service dining for all meals + grab and go items, sundry store, pools and recreation staff, game arcade, are available for all guests. Bell Services runs 24/7 and they can store your items for free, if you arrive early or have a late flight.

• Transportation to/from all resorts to the theme/water parks and Disney Springs - typically starts running about 90 minutes prior to a park opening up through 2 hours past close. Always check the times via the app and the Cast Members if there are any specific changes.

I’m a big fan of proper names - so you’ll get those with each category. All photos are from my own explorations over the years.

Now, Let’s Begin!

Starting with the Value resorts:

• Disney’s All Star Movies Resort

• Disney’s All Star Music Resort

• Disney’s All Star Sports Resort

• Disney’s Pop Century Resort

• Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

You’ll find very brightly themed resorts with tons of colors and Disney art and characters all over these spots. I always like to say, if you want to be smacked in the face with Disney, stay at a Value Resort. And it’s true! The joy that visiting these brings me is a lot, because I think they scream Disney vibes a lot more than the Moderate and Deluxe options. That’s a big selling point for a lot of folks, they want to feel like they’re at Disney and not some random place down the road.

The first Value I ever stayed at was Pop Century, (after stays at POFQ and AKL) and I was like….omg I’m really at a Disney Resort and it brought me so much joy. My son was 5 and it was his first resort, and he absolutely adored it. Those pics pop up in my memories and I’m always just 🥹 every time

Typically, folks who like to rate things have Pop Century and Art of Animation as the top rated options. This is due to the transportation (buses and the Disney Skyliner), and the most in-depth theming.

All Value Resorts have water splash features at their pools, and kiddie pool/splash areas, but there are no hot tubs or water slides at their resorts. There is a pool bar near the main pool at each.

AOA has 3 pools, Pop has 3 pools, and the All Stars each have 2 pools. Each resort has a main themed pool and then the secondary pool/s.

Disney’s Art of Animation

• AOA will always price more than the others in the Value category, primarily due to being a family suite resort, with a private parent bedroom (with private bathroom and walk in shower), a second full bathroom off of the living room (tub/shower), a kitchenette, and a double size Murphy table bed, with a double size pull out couch. During some parts of the year, this resort can price just as much as a Deluxe Resort, because of the extra amenities.

  • You’ll find the three suite areas themed to Finding Nemo, Lion King, Cars, and The Little Mermaid Standard Rooms (actual title) which are 2 queen beds (and the occasional 1 king). Finding Nemo will always price the highest because it’s the most central to everything. Little Mermaid gets folks sometimes grumpy, because it is further away on the end (left to right it’s Mermaid, Lion King, Nemo, Cars if facing the lobby entrance from the parking lot).

    • I try to avoid more than 3 adults in the Family Suites, mainly because 1 adult is fine for a pull down double bed, but anyone 30 and up will know, a pull out couch isn’t great on the ole back. The Family Suites will hold up to 6 adults per fire code.

  • Nemo, Cars, and Little Mermaid all have themed pools - Lion King doesn’t but they do have their own Elephant Graveyard play area, along with a Finding Nemo themed play area. Anyone staying at this resort can use all the pools. Nemo pool plays sounds and more underwater, Cars has free themed Cozy Cone Cabanas (first come, first serve) around its pool.

  • Fun fact - you can book a “Family Suite” if you don’t care which theme of suite you want, and you’ll always save money, as the theme is assigned on check in day, based on what’s available. #sarahadvice

Pop Century

• Pop Century is great for the adults (and kids) who love experiencing a lot of odes to their past, as the theming here is based on the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. Thinking hard about this, the newest decade here is almost 30 years old and now I feel very old as a child of the 80s and 90s.

  • All the rooms here have similar theming and setup. 1 queen bed + 1 queen Murphy bed that doubles as a table, full bathroom. Occasionally you’ll get a 1 king bed instead, but it’s not a bookable category. There’s some cute Mickey theming with characters inside the Table Bed when you pull it down. Fun fact, multiple people have thought I booked them a 1 bed room and didn’t realize it was a table bed (which gives some occasional AAHHH texts).

  • Room location options here (Standard location, Standard Pool, Preferred, Preferred Pool) note generally where you are. I don’t book a lot of Standard Pool rooms, since you’re going to be at the 80s or the 50s section, I try to do more Preferred room area, so you’re close to the central areas, but it’s a little quieter than staring at the main pool.

  Pop and AOA share a stop on the Disney Skyliner, their route flies over the lake to Caribbean Beach, where you’ll switch lines and head to either Epcot or Hollywood Studios. Buses at both run to Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, and the water parks (buses to EP HS will run if bad weather is grounding the Skyliner).

  • If you don’t like heights, you should not stay here due to the Skyliner, OR you should take MinnieVans or other private transport to EP/HS.

    Disney’s All Star Resorts (Movies, Music, Sports)

Sometimes the All Stars get a bad rep. Yes, they are the lowest priced resorts, and yes, during certain parts of the year, they will be hit hard by cheer teams/sports teams (Sports, I’m looking at you), but they are still a Disney Resort, with lots of cheer and cute decor about. My personal preference is Movies, because I adore the 101 Dalmatians area the most.

All three resorts are right in a row from each other. They are the closest to the ESPN Wide World of Sports area (which is why a lot of sports and cheer teams will stay there), with buses to all Disney Destinations. They are a little more basic in decor but you’ll see that more in the lobby area - the outside is still screaming DISNEY DISNEY DISNEY. There’s lots of big grassy areas here to run about, and little kids love big oversized decorations, so it’s still a very cute option.

All rooms here are either 1 king (not a bookable category,) or 2 queen beds, just like at Pop Century. Everyone here is either Standard Location or Preferred Location (closest area to the main central amenities). These resorts are VERY big so it is actually worth it to be closer and save your legs some steps.

ALL STAR MUSIC does have a twist - they also have Family Suites! These rooms are just like at AOA, except that ALL beds are queen beds! You’ll have two pull down queen beds in the living area, with a much much larger kitchenette and bigger fridge area. Still has the two full bathrooms as well. If you’re a family who needs bigger beds, or a group of adults who wants big beds at a lower price, this is actually a really great option, and the Family Suites are in the preferred room area (Calypso).

All Star Movies:

Themes are Fantasia (Preferred), 101 Dalmatians, Toy Story, Herbie the Love Bug, Mighty Ducks - with a main Fantasia themed pool, and a secondary Mighty Ducks themed pool.

All Star Music:

Themes are Calypso (Preferred), Country Fair, Broadway, Rock, Jazz - with a main Calypso themed pool and a secondary Jazz piano themed pool.

All Star Sports:

Themes are Surfing (Preferred), Baseball, Football, Basketball, Tennis - with a Main Surfs Up pool and a secondary Grand Slam baseball pool.

All of the main lobby areas for the Value resorts will have the following things:

• Guest Services & Check-in Desk

• Bell Services

• Food Court (typically open 6a-11pm but check for specific times)

  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner, grab and go items - drink stations for Resort Refill mugs, microwave, seated areas

• Lobby area to rest in with theming and something entertaining, there’s always places to sit, tv with Disney things on, and other stuff.

• Arcade - card operated, lots of variety of games, pay for a game card and it doesn’t expire (if you’re someone who likes to come to Disney a lot and wants to invest)

• There will be a list of various scheduled activities for the week - Movies Under the Stars, nightly campfire, recreation activities, arts and crafts (usually an extra fee)

The bus stops for all Value Resorts will be out in front of the lobby, with signs and TVs indicating next arrival times. You can also check in your app for bus arrival times.

The Value Resorts at Walt Disney World are great for many folks, whether you’re just looking to maximize your budget, or someone who continually tells me “it’s just a room to sleep in!” they are still a great spot to add some memories and have the first impression for your vacation stay.

As of right now, I’ve actually only stayed at Pop Century and All Star Movies (2x). I’ve visited and walked ALL OVER all five Value resorts numerous times, but my goal is to get a stay at every Disney Resort so AOA/Music/Sports, you’re on the list!

I’m going to preface all of this by saying, the news here is geared towards residents of the United States of America (since Substack can be read by anyone), so non-residents of the USA need to check on what they need for their own country.

NUMBER 1 - REAL ID

Do you have a REAL ID? It’s the enhanced driver’s license that has been talked about for ages - has a little Gold Star on it - and you probably had to submit more documents when you renewed your driver’s license in the last couple of years.

Guess what? The implementation of this is finally going to happen, this year, in 2025!

Official enforcement date is May 7, 2025.

This means, if you plan to fly on an airplane, inside the United States, from here on out - you need to produce a form of ID that meets the upgraded security standard. This will be for all travelers 18 and older.

I’ve been checking in with my summer travelers more and more - because this affects everyone. I know, it’s been slowly pushed back more and more - but it looks like it’s really happening and if you plan to fly from here on out - you need to be aware of what you’ll need to board that plane.

Official wording:
Federal agencies, including DHS and TSA, may only accept state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards as identification for purposes of accessing federal facilities - including TSA airport security checkpoints - if the license or card was issued by a REAL ID compliant state in accordance with the REAL ID security standards (meaning the license or card must include the REAL ID compliant star marking). Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL) issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont are considered acceptable alternatives to REAL ID-compliant cards and will also be accepted for official REAL ID purposes. Most EDLs do not contain the star marking and this is acceptable.

This counts for airports, too!

Kids 0-17, TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States. The companion will need acceptable identification.

What if I don’t have a REAL ID and I have a trip scheduled after May 7, 2025?

Travelers who do not present a REAL ID-compliant license or acceptable alternative beginning May 7, 2025 will not be permitted through the security checkpoint.

What forms of ID will I need to show to board a plane for TSA?

• State-Issued Drivers License or State-Issued ID

• U.S. passport

• U.S. passport card

• DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)

• U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents

• Permanent resident card

• Border crossing card

• An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs).

• HSPD-12 PIV card

• Foreign government-issued passport

• Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card

• Transportation worker identification credential

• U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)

• U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

• Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

In coordination with its DHS counterparts, TSA has identified acceptable alternate identification for use in special circumstances at the checkpoint.

A weapon permit is not an acceptable form of identification. A temporary driver's license is not an acceptable form of identification.

Most folks use their driver’s license or a state ID (if they are 18 and older, don’t have a passport, and don’t drive), as their ID to get on a plane. So, this is doubly important for those folks, as you need to make sure your driver’s license is one that will let you board your plane.

What should I be doing now, it’s January, after all?

You should be checking your driver’s license, passports, and other travel ID - and making sure that everything is up to date and compliant. If it isn’t - now is a perfect time to get things updated (especially if it’s getting your updated driver’s license, as that takes about 14-21 days to process and return to you by mail).

Does this mean I don’t need a passport anymore?

NO! A valid US Passport is needed for you to take any flights that leave the United States and land in another country. There are many cruises that require a valid passport to board them (Panama Canal cruises, cruises that start in one US port and end in another US port, etc).

If you’re going to Canada or Mexico - and you don’t live on the border (those folks usually will have passport cards to use for daily use / enhanced driver’s licenses, etc) - you need a passport book. If you live in an area with common access to Canada or Mexico - you probably have already dealt with this.

Should I get a passport card? It’s cheaper than a passport book.

NO NO NO

If you plan to fly out of the United States, you need a passport BOOK.

Do not get a passport card. Only a small percentage of the US population needs a passport card. You need a passport BOOK.

this begs the question - DO YOU HAVE A PASSPORT? or better yet, IS IT VALID OR EXPIRED?

go find it. I’ll wait.

• Can’t find it? Visit here to get yourself a new one (yes I’ve lost them inside my house too and had to get a new one so you’re not alone).
  
  Does my kid need a passport? Any human, leaving the country should have one. Children passports are valid for 5 years, from age 0-15, and humans 16 and older will have passports that are valid for ten years.
  

• What if I have changed my last name, but my passport is still good for several more years? Book your travel to match the passport name, until you decide to update your passport OR get a new book with a new name.
  

• What if I’m running out of pages? You should have at least 3 pages empty for each trip, depending on where you’re going. Check your passport! If it’s damaged or in bad condition, countries and airlines have the right to deny you access to leave, so you need to get it updated if it’s not in good shape.

NUMBER 2/3 - US travelers flying to Europe/United Kingdom/England

Flying to Europe? Flying to England or through England? Prepare for a LOT of abbreviations that start with E!

In 2025, this requires one more step beyond booking a flight or getting your passport.
FYI - these are not the same things as visas, and some countries may ask for a visa for US travelers to visit and stay for a specific amount of time. This is a permission to enter the country.

• ETIAS/EES - new registration for folks visiting the European Union countries. Scheduled to start up in 2025, but officially no date listed yet (EES will start first, and ETIAS will start six months later, so potentially in 2026) Visit here for more info on EES and ETIAS (ETIAS will affect US travelers to the European Union). This probably will become more of a thing in 2026, but it’s good to know that you’ll need to apply for this in order to visit.
  

• ETA - For any US traveler that is flying into England/United Kingdom, starting January 8, 2025 - you need a valid ETA (electronic travel authorization) for each person in your travel party, along with US passport. This has to be done prior to arrival (can be done via the website or the ETA UK app). Allow for at least 3 days to be approved (so don’t wait until last minute).

  • Residents of these countries can apply for an ETA

• What countries comprise the United Kingdom (UK)? Is it different from England?

  • The UK is made up of:

    • England

    • Scotland

    • Wales

    • Northern Ireland

    • The associated small islands under UK control
      

      • Initially - this post was written to note that even if you were just passing through via a layover, you would need to apply for an ETA. After the ETA went into effect, policy was quickly updated that you do not need to apply for an ETA if you are passing though on a layover (airside transit) and will not encounter any border control, as long as you stay within the secure areas of the airport in transit to your next destination.

It is always good to specifically check each if you’re traveling to these destinations starting in May 2025 and beyond.

Both of these require a small payment per person (ETIAS will require payment for those 18-70 only), but all will last for several years after approval, so you won’t have to continually re-apply if you’re someone with multiple plans to visit Europe in a short time frame.

This is the info that is valid now as of publish date. I’m sure things can and will change in the future. Always check to see what the requirements are to visit another country (because you might need to apply in advance for a visa, have immunizations for specific tropical diseases, etc)

For most of the country - it’s a cold miserable time. The kind of time that makes you want to escape from everything, and just go somewhere warm, where you can cuddle up on a chair - stare at the water - and just zone out.

…and with that, welcome to mid-January folks! And boy howdy, this weather around me is miserable and it’s the perfect reason for picking this week’s theme - all-inclusive resorts. However, I’m going to narrow the scope of today to one particular region - the delightful Yucatan Peninsula - and the areas all around Cancun. We shall save the Caribbean for a later date!

We are going to be chatting about where the majority of all-inclusive resorts are found, the two main styles, and some of the bigger names that you’ll find. So, put on your flippy floppies, grab drink and throw a cute straw in it, and let’s get started.

First - a couple of abbreviations, because words are long.

• all-inclusive (AI) - we are talking resorts, not technology, but if you see AI, that’s what I’m referring to in this post.

• adult-only (AO) - in the AI world, AO just means that you need to be 18+ to stay here. While others may have more negative connotations to adult-only, you’re going to find that most destinations are heavily tilted towards AI AO resorts.

• family friendly (FF) - just like what it says, family friendly means that it’s an all ages resort, and they will have kids amenities. Now, some places are better geared for the littles, and others for the teens and older - but family friendly means the whole crew can stay.

Mexico - the genesis of the all-inclusive resorts - and where folks in the US think of first. Vamos a Mexico ahora! (look at me and my almost 800 day duolingo streak)

Whether you’re going to the eastern coast of the Yucatan (Cancun and associated areas), or headed to the western side of the country, to the peninsular Baja California or Puerto Vallarta, there’s a lot of great options. While I’ve booked folks to both sides, I’m going to really focus today on the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home to Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Cancun. Beautiful blue waters and white sands! This peninsula has a Mayan history, and the second largest barrier reef in the world on its outskirts. But this city of just shy of one million folks has the immediate picture of resorts upon resorts. It’s super easy to get here - as the eastern side of the county

The main airport here is Cancun International Airport - which in 2024, had 30 million visitors transit through - making it the second busiest airport in Mexico after Mexico City Airport. A new secondary international airport in the last year is Tulum International Airport, located 2 hours south of Cancun. Its addition means that you can get to those more southern resorts a little easier with a shorter transit time.

You’re going to think of several areas in the Cancun region, and I’m going to focus on 4 specific zones:

• Playa Mujeres - just north of Cancun, very relaxed and chill beachy area - there’s a ferry to Isla Mujeres, a delightful island just northeast of this region, with an even beachier low key vibe and some very lovely resorts. It’s a gated community area, so it’s quiet and chill - lots of golf up in this region.

• Hotel Zone - this is what everyone thinks of when they stay in Cancun, but actually it’s about a 15 minute drive from the airport, to a man made beach zone that looks like a 7 on the map. Resorts up and down this area - along with shopping and nightlife. It’s a great spot for a quick getaway weekend or a longer stay for those who want short car transfers. White sandy beaches and blue blue waters found here.

• Rivera Maya - the main heart of this region, every resort is located on the beach and you’ll drive down the 307 (Carr. Chetumal - Cancun = the road from Chetumal in the south to Cancun in the north) until you reach your resort (when driving south, all resorts are on the left hand side of the road, as that’s beach side). You’ll find several cities along the way, with Playa del Carmen being the biggest (and it has several resorts inside here, along with shopping, entertainment, dining along 5th Avenue, or La Quinta Avenida).

• Tulum - this is the trendy rustic region and town that is filled with a lot of beach clubs, Air BNBs, a lovely archeological site, and lots of cenotes (naturally formed underground pools). Resorts in this area are typically not on the beach of Tulum, but 15-30 minutes away from the beach clubs (which are what everyone thinks of when staying here).

  

Now, you might be asking - which is the right area for me to find my perfect resort? Well, as I’m known to say, the best resort for you is one that fits the following:

• has availability in your price point for your preferred dates of stay

• has the amenities that best suit your needs

• is within a distance that you’re happy to travel to from the airport

All of these will be different for each traveler - so just because your friend from pickleball loved their resort, doesn’t mean that it’s a good choice for you, it just fit them the best.

Arriving in Mexico via Cancun International Airport

Requirements for all US travelers are a valid US passport at time of arrival through departure. There was a need for a Tourism Card filled out for each passenger - that is no longer needed but still found on some websites, it ended in August of 2022.

You do need to pay the VISITAX - this is a tax for all non-Mexican nationals flying into the Cancun International Airport, and is not included into your flight, but it should be paid prior to your departure from the country (you can prepay it prior to arrival, just keep the confirmation / QR code for proof of payment). For some, the official site can be a little frustrating, and you can use the Travelkore site as it has been less glitchy and with easier tracking. Those two sites are THE ONLY TWO OFFICIAL SITES to take the VISTAX payment, and please ignore any others (valid as of publish date if reading this in the future).

First thing, yes - the signs are in Spanish and English, for those a little worried about dusting off their high school Spanish skills.

When you hop off the plane, you’ll follow everyone else down to immigration. Passports ready! You’ll see automated non-staffed kiosks, and staffed kiosks. You’ll get your passport stamped if you’re in a staffed kiosk, or a paper slip if you’re going through the automated kiosks. Just don’t lose that paper (stick in back in your passport), as you’ll need to show it when you leave to head back to the US.

After you finish with security, you head on towards baggage! There are video screens for each baggage corral, so look for your flight, and be patient. Sometimes it’s quick and sometimes you might wait 30ish minutes. Your transfer companies are aware of the delay and they will be waiting for you.

After you collect your bags, then it’s time to head outside. No matter the terminal you fly into - you’ll have to walk through, what is politely called in the travel industry, as the timeshare alley. There’s going to be a ton of folks trying to get your attention, so they can “help” you with getting a transfer to your resort. Now, if you’re my client, we’ve already gotten a private transfer set up so you just keep walking until you hit fresh air - but if you aren’t and you’re just reading this - DO NOT STOP HERE AND KEEP GOING! These folks are not your friends and you need to keep walking until you’re outside. Grab a transfer there from cabs if you’re into that. Otherwise, all pre-scheduled transfer companies will be outside. Everyone has a themed shirt, many have signs, some have signs with names - look for who you booked, and check in with them.

For me, I like to book a private transfer where I can order food, drink, snacks, etc to be there waiting for me, since I’m probably hungry.

Shared vs private transfers - which is better?

Shared transfers mean you’re going to have a big van with multiple folks who might be going to your resort, or another resort near you - so they will be doing multiple dropoffs. If you’re in absolutely no rush, and you’re up to seeing a lot of places, and you want the cheapest option - a shared transfer might be the right choice for you.

Private transfers mean just that - it’s for you and your travel party. This is what I like to book for folks, because it means once you’re picked up, you are headed directly to your destination. There are some transfer companies that will do a stop at Walmart etc for you if you want to go pick up some sunscreen etc - but most folks just want to get on with vacation.

Should you tip your transfer? I do, depending on the length of travel, $10-20. I’m traveling on vacation, and the tourism industry in Mexico and the Caribbean is highly dependent on tips, and if I can afford to come down here, I will be tipping. I know that’s a touchy subject for folks - but that’s just where I stand.

Travel to the resorts

In general, I always note - expect several hours of travel time from your arrival at the airport to your resort. This allows for:

• getting off the plane, going through immigration/customs

• getting your luggage (which can sometimes take a little longer than we’d like, so it’s good to know there are lots of bathrooms around the baggage claims)

• getting your transfer and then getting on the road, and any traffic en route

• get checked in to your resort

Travel days can be long for that reason, but being ready, and being patient are the most important things to make your life easier.

On the way back home? Expect that you’ll probably have a pickup time with your transfer, around 4-5 hours prior to your flight departure, in order to allow for travel time back to the airport, checking luggage/check in/security (as you should be at an airport 3 hours prior to an international flight). Make sure you have your passport in hand, along with the little paper from arrival day (if you went through the automated kiosks), and proof of your VISITAX payment for each guest.

Remember that if you have a layover back home, you’ll still have to go through immigration on that first layover, and collect your luggage and recheck it, plus then go through security AGAIN. So, keep that passport handy and never check it - keep it on you when traveling. And, always leave a 3 hour layover when coming back from an international destination!

Arriving to your resort!

You’re here! You’ve gotten to your home for the next several days/week, and now what comes next?

You’ll head to the lobby for check in - depending on the resort / type of room you booked, you might wait a little bit or you might have a private check in. Depending on what time you arrived, your room might be ready, or not quite yet - usually arrivals before 3-4pm, you’ll need to store your luggage with bell services, and arrivals after means you can head to your room.

You’ll still put a card on file upon check in, for any purchases you might charge to your room. There is an eco tax that is per night for all resort rooms in the Quintana Roo state, for protection of the local ecological structures, and it is approximately about $1-2 a night, and paid at the end of your stay.

The fancier the resort, you might get a guided walk to your room, and be shown the amenities of your room before the staff member departs. All depends on the resort / room type.

Some resorts have their version of a concierge or butler service - where you’ll have exclusive access to a private lounge, upgraded room amenities, extra assistance with any needs you’ll have during your stay, daily contact via WhatsApp for any needs and so on.

If you’re arriving prior to room getting ready - it’s okay! You’re on vacay mode! It’s time to take a walk around the resort, grab a bite or drink, and just acclimate yourself to your new digs. If your room is ready, make sure to scope out everything, and note the fire exits in case of emergency. Also be aware - many resorts will have their air conditioning automatically shut off if you have a balcony door open, so they aren’t trying to cool down the neighborhood. Yes, even in Mexico - your parents claims of not providing air conditioning for the neighbors will still exist so be aware.

Tipping the staff

Yes, while the resorts guests typically stay in are labeled all-inclusive, tipping is still accepted by the service staff. Bring small clean bills (if USD - only bring non-beat up money as it will have to be accepted for exchange by the local banks), or exchange your money prior to arrival into Mexican pesos. Assume the average exchange rate is 20 MXN = 1 USD // 1 MXN = $0.05 USD - but check that link for today’s exchange rate.

The folks at your resort work incredibly hard to provide a fabulous vacation for you and your crew. I usually recommend acknowledging the housekeeping staff, room service, servers, or anyone else that provides you a helpful service. You’ll still be served if you don’t tip - but don’t be that person.

You’re all checked in and unpacked, now what?

Well, that’s a great question and the answer is typically - whatever you’d like!

Many folks like taking that first couple of days to just relax, wander about the resort, and adjust their attitude to a chill pace.

You’ll find resorts now have apps with dining location availability, how to order room service, when daily scheduled activities are held and where, and other fun features. I recommend to download them ahead of time, so you can connect to the resort free wifi to use them. There will usually be a premium wifi you can pay for per day, if you need higher levels of speed for work/social media purposes.

Most resorts will have full service spas, fitness centers, pool and beach areas, bars and lounges, walk up cafes and grab and go spots, a buffet, and themed restaurants. The more high end the resort, the more options - but no matter your budget, you’ll find something that fits the bill to entertain you.

Some places are more pool focused, and some are more beach focused. There are a frequent amount of guests who love to play the “pool chair game” and go out at early morning to grab themselves a bunch of pool or beach chairs so they can have them all day - this is annoying and frustrating but many resorts try to police this. You can usually find cabanas, bali beds, or beach palapas to rent - and usually those will come with a couple of extras.

Many folks love doing excursions - “field trips” away from the resort to do adventurous activities - whether it’s visiting a cenote, checking out local archeological destinations, visiting an adventure park, or checking out local towns for shopping. Other folks prefer to just stay at the resort and do absolutely nothing but lay out in the sun, nap, eat, repeat. And all of those are perfect options. It’s your vacation!

If you’re deciding on leaving the resort - many folks like to book ahead, so they have a confirmed spot and not have to worry about a location filling up their spots for the day. I always recommend choosing something that has a good cancellation policy, in case of weather or other issues. You can book at your resort, there’s always an excursions desk - or you can book ahead and add something to your resort package, or through a trusted tour provider.

A couple of big places that stretch along the Riviera Maya are the Grupo Xcaret Eco-Parks. These outdoor parks have a massive variety of options from zip-lining, floating through the mangroves, underground ATV paths, nighttime dining adventures on a boat, or just completely messing with your senses. There are a total of 12 parks in the Grupo Xcaret umbrella, stretching from above Cancun to Tulum.

Another way to visit the parks, is staying at the Xcaret resorts - La Casa de la Playa, Hotel Xcaret Arte, or Hotel Xcaret Mexico. All three are on the same resort area, lined up next to each other. They all have complimentary access and transportation to the Xcaret parks included with stays at each resort. I like to refer to them as the “Walt Disney World of Mexico” but it’s a comparison only in concept - as these resorts honestly blow anything at WDW away (and I say that with love, as I am an Annual Passholder for WDW!). These resorts are located about 1 hour south of Cancun International Airport, and about 15 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. Roundtrip transfers from Cancun International Airport are automatically included with a stay at any resort, with private transfers being the standard for La Casa de la Playa, and shared motor coach transfers from HXA and HXM.

Unique and authentic cultural experiences, food choices, relaxation, and recreation - all are found here. One of the coolest things are the rivers that float around HXM and HXA - as you can borrow canoes or kayaks to paddle about, or just grab a life jacket and float about - as this river is directly fed from the ocean.

Beach lovers - there is a bit of a rocky beach on the oceanfront areas - but you can go do some exploring and hanging about - but it’s not typically a white sandy beach style location. There are wonderful relaxing pools and more all about the resort, including several roof top pools!

• La Casa de la Playa (LCDLP)- adult-only (AO 18+), all oceanfront, facing butler suites, 24/7 room service, with full access to all areas of both Hotel Xcaret Arte and Hotel Xcaret Mexico, including private transportation to those resorts, and parks. This section of the resort complex has a small, boutique hotel feel - but a perfect way to spoil yourself with every amenity accounted for in your stay. The inclusions with all reservations here are astounding, and it’s a spectacular resort within a resort.

• Hotel Xcaret Arte (HXA) - AO (16 and older is considered AO at this resort, but this resort is not geared for teens to bounce around, so mature teens would benefit more from a stay here), with multiple themed buildings, each with their own concept (Casa de Artistas building is AO 18+, and has the oceanfront building, with a unique building only restaurant - guests in Artistas have full access to anything at Hotel Xcaret Mexico). Rooms will be either 2 queens or 1 king bed, with several suite options.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico (HXM) - FF - expect rooms to be 1 king bed or 2 queen beds, but except for suites, expect that you’re going to have a max of 4 people per room. Guests staying here can enjoy dining, recreation, pools, and relaxation. Guests staying here do not have access to HXA or LCDLP. Theming here is very similar to the views at HXA, with numerous pools and access into the ocean-fed river, numerous dining options, spa, and kids areas.

Well, that was a lot of info!

There are so many resorts, all up and down the coast line, some amazing, some mid, and some meh. That’s kind of where I roll in, because staying up on resorts and destinations is kind of what I do, folks.
